    2. Maxine, I am jumping in on this thread and perhaps, I should not but based on what I have done is contact the local Veterans organization and ask for help. They are a great source or at least they have been for me. I do not know about the death benefits for widows and children that far back but as I recall there was an insurance payable to the person as selected by the service member and it did not have to be a spouse. When we Married that policy, if it had become payable would have been to his mother. He made changes the week we married and later we changed to a different type of policy but that was long ago.
