Long before I had an Ancestry Subscription, I had an Ancestry Membership so that I could search their records and use their free material. Nothing that required money but I could search and compile lists of possibilities. Right now I do not have a subscription but I can still go to my tree, search for possibilities, and use their free material. This type of membership is at no cost. When their freebies come along all I have to do is go sign in to my account. A membership also means you can receive their various newsletters which often have great tips for your searches. Once you have set up an account, all you need to do is sign in when they run their freebies. If you do their 14 day free trial and want to cancel just be sure to call before 14 days roll around to cancel the trial. I agree with you Marilyn. I am signed up at a lot of places so I can help myself and others. It isn't evil to be signed up with a good site. We have so many helpful members who are willing to help others that many of us have received that record, document, or news item from searching where we do not have a paid subscription and then asking if a list member could send us the item we found. I often wonder if others know that many of the paid sites can be searched without a paid subscription. My bookmarks bar has Ancestry, Footnote, and Genealogy Bank which are paid sites plus Family Search and RootsWeb. I also get newsletters from all of these and often find just the hint I need for find a missing link. I think the newsletters, blogs and other helpful sites should be part of everyone's guide to improving their searches. OK, I will get off the soapbox.
