    2. I, too, use CCleaner as a registry and file cleaner, and it has been very effective over the years. Keith didn't use CCleaner because it removed some files he needed, and he had to reinstall them. I don't recall what he used, but I tried what he used and it removed files that I needed -- files from MS Office Pro 97. So Keith and I use different cleaners only because of what the cleaners didn't like on our respective computers. In the cleanup section, I unchecked those files I don't want removed, such as history and cookies, and those I'm not sure of. On a related note: In the past one could view cookies and easily figure out their source and whether one needed to retain or delete certain cookies. Has anyone else noted that recently installed cookie file names are now gobbledygook and difficult to determine their source without going into the confusing text portion and searching for a domain name? EXAMPLE: Before: _woody@ancestry[1].txt_ (mailto:woody@ancestry[1].txt) Now: WPCDXCB7.txt Woody +++++++++++++++++++ ylstrong@charter.net writes: Thanks Elaine, I use CCleaner as well and do back up before I clean. I might be using Registry recklessly however because when I receive the result of the scan, then backup, I "Fix Selected Issues". Perhaps I need to Google and find out if I am using it properly. Actually on my Registry Cleaner all the boxes are checked - I have never changed it so that must be default right? I will do some studying up on CCleaner and make sure I am using it correctly. 3. My new computer came with a 4 year subscription to Trend Micro Titanium, and I downloaded Microsoft Security Essencials (or whatever it is called)along with C Cleaner, Malewarebytes and I uninstall with RevoUninstaller. Microsoft and Trend seem to be working well together. On Malwarebytes I left everything at default, what was checked I left checked and what wasn't checked I left it unchecked. With C Cleaner I don't do the registry. Is there anything in that line I am missing? I am runing Windows 7 64 bit and am beginning to get used to it :) I know there are programs that came preinstalled that I don't need and yet I don't know enough about them to want to uninstall them yet, but being new I have plenty of memory and hard drive for now. It included a disk to download Adobe Photoshop which I may uninstall since I think it is far to complicated for me..George I thought you were gone, hadn't seen you on here in a long time, Son is enjoying his computer, that laptop is still going . 3. I have had Trend Micro for years, and wouldn't change. It does a very good job for me, as I don't understand most of the computer stuff and it has kept me out of trouble for a long time. 3. Woody; Truth be known, I haven't given it a look or even a second thought, as I sandbox much of what comes in on my systems. I have been much to busy taking care of the grand kids as of late and have not had much time to pursue the conundrums related to the IE9. Just been happy that it does what I need to do and does better than prior iterations hehe. Maybe tonight I may investigate your query and possible stimulate some of my grey matter to something else than playing the guitar all night. As far as CCleaner,,,well yeah, it's earlier versions did rely on a pretty hefty knowledge of what you needed and what you didn't need, and many of the choice that were present in the earlier versions could render a system unable to boot. That problem has pretty much been obliterated in the newest releases as those options are not even available to the user. 3. Thanks for everyone's input. Like Keith, I had used CCleaner at one time along with Spybot only to have some essential files deleted (and no I'm not good at backups). Since I didn't know which product caused the problem, I deleted both and moved on. I will try other suggestions too. Thanks everyone. ----- Original Message ----- From: <BogusWoody@aol.com> To: <gen-newbie@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, December 08, 2011 3:02 PM Subject: Re: [GN] Replacement for Ad Aware > > I, too, use CCleaner as a registry and file cleaner, and it has been very > effective over the years.
