    3. Ubuntu is a very viable alternative for many aging systems. I have it on a 64gb flash drive and it runs fine, and you can run it on a lot less,. I use 64gb just for all the extra storage for applications and files ,I just boot to the flash drive and do my thing. The only problem I have with Ubuntu is there are no applications that provide the high end vid/music processing I use, unless I want to resort to a few less than satisfactory on line programs. That being said there are lot of programs to cover general computing uses and surfing ,email etc. The newer Chromebooks all use a customized version of Ubuntu and are very cost affective. Acer has a Chromebook that runs around 270$ with a Intel Haswell cpu that is very good, even with multi tasking. Yes there is a learning curve, but for most it is not insurmountable and for the most part you will only need to learn how to install applications and user interface to be up and running..There are how to guides all over the place. In some respect I am surprized more people don't use Ubuntu, especially so seeing how there are several version with easy to follow icon driven GUI's = ( the graphic user interface you are used to in windows). The plus side is the OS and a bunch of apps can all be free( all mine are) and even if you afraid to install the OS yourself a computer shop should be able to install it for just labor charges. 3. DId some more looking around,, guess what,,, latitude 530 is has exactly the same hardware as the dell d520 . Win 7 works fine on it, just had to use the win default drivers and of course the custom option for the install,,,You will have to back up the hd drive so you don't loose any file you wish to keep, and some of your xp programs may not work unless there are up grades for them, so you will need to have the disks to reinstall them or up date them. don't forget that you may have to update printers/scanners might not work with out win 7 ndrivers so check with the manufacturer .Looks like win 7 will work for you. 3. I did some poking around and the latitude is not directly supported by DELL in any of their combo cab files, however this doesn't mean it wont work. It would be just a very custom install. 2 megs ain't much, but it is certainly enough to run a 32 bit ver of win7. You may not be able to get the built sound card working fully, and the graphics drivers may not be able to use some of the options in in win 7, but I'd be willing to bet it would work as well if not better than it does now. I haven't look to see if there are modem or ethnet drivers that will work with your exact system, but again that is more of a matter of doing some digging . If there is a work around for that there is also no reason you couldn't go on line with it. The big caveat is most places don't want to mess around doing all the research and digging,,,not any money in it. If you do not expose the computer to the Internet ( not connected to a modem), it won't make any difference what operating system you use. If you need to connect, I would suggest looking into Linux. 3. My question too, Beth. I have no problem with the laptop I have now. I doubt it would upgrade to Win 7. But even if it did, I have an old version of FTM on here for one of my families that I don't add to often, but do reference. And an old version of RootsMagic for the other side of my family. If I could upgrade, would I be able to access these programs? No way do I want the expense of a new computer, etc., as my kitchen range just quit. I wish someone would "take over XP"; I am betting they would have more business than they could handle. I am so upset about this that I am seriously thinking of going with Mac...if I have to buy a bunch of new software, then I hate to give the money to Microsoft. I use this for a kind of back-up for pictures and documents, FTM and other things, but it is not my main computer. I did add more memory to it last year....it now has 2GB of memory. This has been a lifesaver in the past when my desktop had problems. I would like to keep it working the best possible. If you do not expose the computer to the Internet ( not connected to a modem), it won't make any difference what operating system you use. If you need to connect, I would suggest looking into Linux. 3. There are a lot of known issues with IE and XP, plus it just isn't as secure as newer OS's. Variables between system configurations, hardware, and applications, speed of connections etc, all take there toll. Older systems in many cases are just not up to the task to run newer internet apps/or brpwsers..older websites took advantage of a lot of cross platform apps like java which seems no matter how much they update seems to always have another security issue. Without examining the failure log files and tracking down the cause( which could be more than one) it's hard to say what your exact problem is. Even than many times the fix is to move up to win7. However,, that being said the chrome browser seems to be able to handle a lot of these issues better for those who for whatever reason have chosen to stay with winxp. I will say although win xp was one of the better iterations of windows, it's well past time to move on. I'd say in your case to try out chrome for a browser until you decide to move on. cheers George & the Sixpack -----Original Message----- From: doreen wheatley Sent: Friday, March 07, 2014 5:32 AM To: gen-newbie@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GN] IE problem Yes Elaine I run ccleaner quite a lot will what happens at end of April Doreen ******************** Gen-Newbie's website: http://www.rootsweb.com/~newbie/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to GEN-NEWBIE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
