    1. [GN] Desktop computer problems - AVG & Keyboard
    2. Joyce
    3. Further to my previous message below: I think that the techi at Staples was trying to be helpful in not doing any further work or cleanup on my computer, he didn't try to sell me anything just didn't want to charge me for work when my computer might not last very long. My keyboard problem resolved itself after a couple of powering down and up again. so far so good. I had bought my ACER computer at a different store and will ask them what they recommend. I too had bought an HP printer at Walmart and an extended warranty and when I complained about a minor problem after just one month, they too told me I had to deal with HP. When I called HP they told me they would ship me a brand new printer and told me to dispose of my any way I saw fit they did not want it back, so I turned it over to a relative. Soon I will have to have a look at a laptop computer to update it or even have to replace it as the rubberized cover is deteriorating and leaves my hands black when using the keyboard. Hey I thought we were finished here in southern Ontario with snow for the season, but see the road is covered again tonight. Joyce Hello all - I just read all past weeks message today as I've had trouble with so many updates needed that I took it into Staples Monday but found that they would not do any work on it as they think that there is a problem with a capacitor in the motherboard. Told me to just keep using it as long as I could. Not very helpful I must say - Oh they did recommend Microsoft Security Essentials to replace my free AVG Anti-virus program which expired too. A lot of my trouble started with Rogers changes to settings so they are coming in on Saturday to check about their anti-virus program which I don't know or remember about. Plus to bring in adaptor for my digital TV to work. However - would anyone have any experience with Wise Care 365 or the AVG regular anti-virus programs? I got AVG to download another free program in the meantime. Am looking for one that is most cost efficient??? A second question is why my regular keyboard won't work. Number lock light and volume controls only work. Am using a temportary large lettered keyboard that just plugs into USB port to type this. Seems to me if the two keys mentioned work its getting power, right? Any comments appreciated until I can get hold of Staples tech either Saturday or Monday. cheers Joyce

    1. [GN] driver update program (george)
    2. Joyce
    3. I had tried a program some time ago like PC Drivers and was told I had 19 drivers that needed updating. This past week I tried Slim Drivers and it said I needed two updating. So I clicked on the second one to update and it said it was done in about 2 minutes. Then later I clicked to update the first one and it took well over an hour before it was done and I wondered it more than one driver was being updated. it was listed as (NVIDIA GeForce 93....) would that mean anything to anyone??? After than I figured that the PC one was perhaps just scamming me so I had it uninstalled. I did not click to order slim drivers recommendation to order their offer as I just wanted to see would the free issue would do. Hopefully I don't have any other drivers to update but think there is another notice that pops up now and then like Firefox today which AVG reported as a threat. regards Joyce Becarefull installing Slim drivers,,It does a good job, but it wants to install a couple of other programs that can lead to browser hijackings and re directs, Uncheck them. It will also bug you to buy the proversion and only updates one driver ata time in the free version. That is a minor inconvenience as far as I am concerned and it has seldom failed to locate the latest drivers. Cheers George & the SixPAck

    3. Thanks Diane, I am not looking for the APO information...I need all of my husband's service files, which they tell me were burned in the fire in St. Louis. The sites you sent are certainly great for the person looking for APO info. I'm sure they will appreciate your help. 3. I don't know if someone has posted this info or not, but I can tell you the military veterans were supposed to have their DD 214, or discharge papers, registered in the county court house where they lived. I remember my husband doing this but I don't know how wide spread this went.....as far as I recall there wasn't a fine for anyone not complying. 3. Do you have a link you can post? -----Original Message----- From: gen-newbie-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:gen-newbie-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Kelly Sent: Saturday, March 22, 2014 1:28 PM To: gen-newbie@rootsweb.com Subject: [GN] Irish Female Immigrants ---> NYC I want to share a site that even living in Manhattan I was unaware of: Watson House ( .org) It was a mission down near Castle Garden ( lower Manhattan) run by the Catholic Church for single Irish women coming in to NYC. The site has searchable records and an online exhibition. Even the press articles are fascinating to read! Apparently Irish siblings might come to America but never reform as families once here hence single young women needing shelter and jobs. Thought it might help someone to find a relative...
