    3. As near as I can tell, FamilySearch still provides for free all the things they provided free before. Some records, such as Ohio Death Certificates, now require registration, which they did not require before, but they remain free. I have a mild complaint that the "sign in" link is hard to see for eyes that don't see as well as they once did. FamilySearch also now has cooperating agreements with Ancestry and what used to be Footnote, primarily for some records FamilySearch itself does not have. When you conduct a search that leads to one of these pay sites, you can still have limited access for free. I can have free view of a few (three?) census records on Ancestry, for example, in a single day from FamilySearch referrals. 3. I haven't used it recently so I don't know. I do know that when trying to help Michael with his Michael Downey records I found some information at Ancestry but didn't have a high enough subscription to open up the records I was interested in. I am hoping someone with passenger records rights will take a look at Michael's request. 3. Is it possible that someone can cite an example of what "used to be" there (ie: free on one of the "free" sites) and is no longer there? I'm just not clear on what this means. 1. [GN] free resources
    2. Mary Finley
    3. A wonderful, free resource is findagrave. saw the posts about the dwindling free resources. It spurred me on to search Free Resources (THE BOOK isn't progressing as quickly as I'd like.)I've found gems there and two come to mind. One of Jack's greats was John Powers b. Ire. abt. 1820. I searched for his death for years. His wife Ellen O'Brien Powers died in 1917. Finda grave had a picture of his stone in Parkesburg, Chester, PA with dod clearly etched 2 Sept 1871. I never did find an obit for him and his death cert is not found in Phila., so he must have died in Chester County. I am VERY happy to have the cemetery record. It didn't cost a penney. I did donate a memorial to the website. Another was just last evening. Only two of eight McCANNEY siblings married, Gr-grf Thomas and his sister Lizzie McCANNEY WALKER. I have everything on James, my direct line (family burial plots are grand indeed!!). I knew about David WALKER because he was a hunting drowning accident who died Dec 1908 and there was lots of news coverage since he wasn't found until Feb. 1909. Aunt Lizzie lived on. There she was! Aunt Lizzie McCANNEY WALKER in a plot very near my family, buried with her daughter A. Marie WALKER McCOY in 1932. As a bonus I now have my cousin's married name. Free Resources are still out there! And, I love Heritage Quest as a compliment to Ancestry. It allows a different approach to finding a census record. You can enter a forename and choose an age group and place of birth. Scanning the results is quick and often yields a name botched by census taker or transcriber. Ex. 1860 PA Phila b. Ire age 27-35 James (or Jas-you have to try both). HQ is still free through many libraries. Many of us live on fixed retirement incomes. Perhaps we could have a thread listing all the free resources you can remember. Happy Hunting and Happy Halloween! Mary McCanney Finley

    3. Thanks Elaine, I was afraid of what all it would delete. I ran my Malwarebytes to "clean computer", then ran Avast agin and it is clean. Love that Malwarebytes! Another problem that I have never heard of: My daughter sent an email to me. The next day sent another, saying the same thing. When I called her she said her email to me had come back to her! It stayed on my computer as well. (This happened twice). Any idea what caused that? Thanks so much for the reply. Then here came a couple of VERY loud thunder bangs (didn't see any lightning) then came a shower, fairly heavy - rain. A bit later, hail! about the size of those little candies called "skillets" - Hailed enough to make the ground and our black fields, almost white! We got quite a bit of hail, too. I think most are done with small grain harvest and also sugar beets. I don't know if the hail would have hurt the corn, any. What a bunch of weird weather! Shalom, NancyT
