    3. Thnx, Bruce, I wasn't aware of the 'new' version. So you still need internet service, you just plug it into your computer for a minute to register, and then directly into your router? Is that what the LAN cable is? What do you mean about the new one being cheaper to use? Because you can turn off your computer, since the old one wouldn't work if your computer was turned off?? We don't turn ours off very often, maybe we should. sorry for so many questions :) melissa On Sun, Nov 6, 2011 at 9:36 PM, Bruce Kemp <wb7ooe@wbcable.net> wrote >> > There are now 2 verities of Magic Jack devices. 3. Hi Linda Magic jack explains on their website how to use it. you must plug it into the USB port of your computer, then you can connect a phone to the other end of Magic Jack. It's not a land line, it operates on the VOIP principal so you can't plug it into a phone jack. Magic Jack PLUS (it's new) does not require a computer to work. For MJ PLUS you simply plug it directly into a router and a normal electrical outlet I have MJ, love it but recently ordered MJ PLUS as I want to have access 24/7 without leaving my computer on. 3. Linda, we have a MagicJack phone. Have had it for several years, 3 or 4? It uses our broadband and it works fine, as long as someone isn't 'using' the computer the MJ is plugged into. We have it on the less powerful of our two main computers. I have my gmail as the contact email, so when someone phones and we don't answer the voice message is left on my gmail account. That part is sort of crappy, but at least we know there was a call and can phone back if we can't understand the message. We all already have cell phones, already pay too much for those, so I saw no reason to keep paying 40 a month for the land phone. melissa On Sun, Nov 6, 2011 at 5:43 PM, Blondie Mock <ZooKeeperss@webtv.net> wrote: > Well, gang, made a leap of faith...After the last dr. visit and a clean > health record, my 1st stop was the Verizon show case, now have a new > Iphone-4, oh, that's fun, then signed up for wi-fi and its now > installed, but I am so far behind in anti- virus ware, its been 3 days > installing, (whew), now waiting to install my NETGEAR USB port, package > says can't until the updates are installed, ok, I wait some more! She called Geek Squad and they set up wifi in her home because she had internet connection for her computer, it just wasn't wireless. 3. This is a forwarded message From: .... valentine53179 <valentine53179@hotmail.com> let's say you are looking for "wild bill"  in between the years of 1840 and 1850 but don’t want to go about looking at the query results for 1840 and then 1841 and then 1842 etcetcetc... here is how... enter in exactly "wild bill" +"numrange:1840..1850"   should be "wild bill" +"1840..1850"    or "wild bill" +1840..1850 yes there are TWO...not THREE..dots! and  yes, there are quotes around each of the query components... that is because I don’t want to see all the entries that have wild and I don’t want to see all the entries that have bill I WANT to see the entries that have WILD BILL continguous to each other and so I Quote them.... I don’t use ' I use " now, I will say that people on the list will put in wild +bill +1840 and they say they are happy with the results... but if you are going to do that then wild bill 1840 is just as good and so save  yourself the trouble of the + because google now ASSUMES the + a few words about the placement of the + if you enter it as wild + bill with spaces between, you are accomplishing nothing... you must place the +directly next to the qualifier that you have following it to work... so look at what I have noted in the first entries and see the placement... when making a statement you mist consider the space as important as a symbol or character.... I would very much like to see people tell us exactly what they used in their query when they have said that they tried to find something and did not feel that they were successful... copy and paste EXACTLY what you used and let others on the list see and we can help you with a better structure.. creating a query is no different in importance than asking about how to print a web page or which adaware version etcetctc that we talk about... and if you get critical comments about those types of posts from other listers, then dismiss them... the object is to learn... and if you do not understand what someone is stating, then it behooves you and others to ask for clarification...

This is a forwarded message From: .... valentine53179 <valentine53179@hotmail.com> AN EXERCISE for newbies here is the Original Message: "having a brain freeze today, could sks please tell me the name of the site the names of those killed in the Wars, and it tells you when they were killed and were they are buried." so, we see that the writer knows what she wants and actually has the info that she needs to make a decent enough query on google... as in                         war killed buried just like that... just as I have it... all words that were used in the note to the list.. and in the first five results, not only does the american battle monuments page come up as TOPS but from there will have links to the various wars and the WWII memorial page... and some extra surprises on top of it...

    3. This is a forwarded message from a reader: you need to u nderstand quote marks as in the detroit query where you received no hits... the quotes tell google to find those specific words adjacent to each other. That is why you might get a jazillion hits with pat in tucson but only those results that are valid it you use "pat in tucson" in the case of Etm's "chicken" genealogy The logic is that it is a name, a noun specifically and those places where chicken is an adverb or an adjective are totally skipped. The presence of genealogy is the logic where somewhere on the page or result, is genealogy, even if not specific to the location on that page where chicken is found... in the case of upper and lower case, always regardless of what is proper english, use lower case. Lower case will deliver upper and lower wherease it is likely that an upper case statement will NOT deliver the lower case results. carots are a nuisance and what you are trying to do is bracket as in code. It does nothing but confuse people. the only thing that <> are valid for nowadays are in email addresses... period. in the case of Wheeldon murders Detroit 1957.... Detroit is used by itself because there arent too many DETROITS in the world but it perhaps it was in a town that exists in several places in the world such as..... washington one would have said Wheeldon murders "washington dc" 1957 or Wheeldon murders "washington il" 1957 if in the case one was not sure of the year, then wheeldon murders detroit numrange:1955..1965 (NOTICE 2, not 3 or 1 but TWO dots here and yes, it is important) which then would deliver the results of the act and then any subsequent trial/court information (it did result in 197 results...) however, then comes those nuisance results... like christopher the choreographer so the quesry should be changed ot wheeldon murders detroit numrange:1955..1965 -christopher (notice the dash has no space between istelf and the next word..., if yu you the space, then the machine will assume that the - and christopher are both part of the results you wish.) (now we are down to 59 results... but lets just say that one of the murdered WAS a christopher, then instead use -choreographer. One error in the whole of this is the single word MURDERS it should be murder NO S... Google will look for what you have entered but will not make the word shorter... entering in murder will get you murder AND MURDERS....
