This is my favorite blog for eBooks. I subscribe to an email mailing and it arrives faithfully each day. I always read it on time since some free or reduced price books are often only available for that day. http://blog.booksontheknob.org/ There are others, but this is one of the better blogs to start with. I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet and would like to get it printing on my home network. Here is the wired network setup: Cable Modem <--- Belkin router <--- HP 2840 printer. I also have a desktop and one netbook, and sometimes another two laptops connected wirelessly. I can print from the desktop and laptops to the printer with no problem. The printer has a fixed IP on the router. Can anyone recommend an Android app that will allow me to print from the Tablet when connected to he home network? I have no real desire to print from a remote location but might perhaps if such a utility exists. I do not want to rely on the cloud systems that are available. Aloha Wayne, NH6K
Hi, Thank you so much for the info about amazon. What I have been trying to do is change my tablet over from android to windows7, as I cannot get any media on my tablet. Wish that had been on the box when I bought it last year.(Ha) Would you know how to do that, if so, please let me know. pat ________________________________ From: ETM <etm1935@gmail.com> To: marilyn E B <gen-newbie@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 9, 2011 11:03 AM Subject: Re: [GN] eBooks Marilyn, it should download from Amazon. Hi, I am interested in finding Sarah Finch married to Thomas P Ainsworth of Mississippi and South carolina, or anyother place where she may have been located. I would like very much to know everything about her as she has a lot to offer our family. Thank you for taking the time to read this mail.
In addition to the information below, I would recommend checking with your local libraries for information about what digital book formats they supports. My local library has a page listing the various devices for the different digital formats: e-pub, pdf, etc. I use a Kobo reader and am able to read anything that is in e-pub or pdf, from 3 different online digital libraries. I was surprised at the number of free books available for my genealogy research re: surname histories and immigration. If the ability to adjust the font size is important, I would not recommend downloading books in pdf format, as pdf has limited adjustment options on the Kobo. Happy searching! We don't turn ours off very > often, maybe we should. sorry for so many questions :) > > > The cost savings comes from not having to run the computer all the time. Once the device is registered, it is removed from the USB port on the computer and it plugs into the power supply. The cable from the router plugs into one port and the telephone is plugged into the other. The very interesting thing is that if you travel, even outside of the country, you can take the device with you and use it with your computer and any wired phone the same as the original Magic Jack. Start with CNet's advice on free books for Kindle or Nook: http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39-20087714-285/how-to-get-free-books-for-your-kindle-or-nook/ Amazon, of course, has a site for free Kindle books: http://www.amazon.com/Totally-Free-kindle-Books/lm/R27UG52OAM3TFX And Barnes & Noble has one for its Nook, too: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/Free-eBooks/379003078/ This site, now four years old, also lists many excellent sources of free and low-cost books: http://mashable.com/2007/11/12/public-domain-ebook-sources/
That depends on the book and where you get it from. There ARE free books that you can download and there are very inexpensive books that you can get also, Most books that you download are ususally cheaper than the printed books are (even the newest best sellers). You can try reading them using your computer (both Kindle and Nook have free programs for computers that you can try and see how it works without having to buy their readers). >I too know nothing about WiFi. Many eReaders accept ePubs which public libraries use for lending, the period is almost always 21 days in my area, no renewal, though you can return and borrow the book again. Kindle just started lending from its own library and also supports borrowing from public libraries. In addition a ton of books are available free for all the eReaderes. I tend ot prefer the Kindle and so I am on mailing lists that notify me of free and inexpensive books available in Kindle format. I just finished Outlander #1 and am in #2. I own the first edition, think that may have been free, and borrowed the second edition, the books are long, I am not sure I will finish in 21 days. My choice would be to borrow it again or buy it. I like the series so much I might buy it. I believe we discussed a version of this last year, but theyyyyyy'rrrreeee baaaack! Scammers are calling people and telling them they have a virus in their computer. . .and it goes on from there. They gain access to the computer and next, want your credit card for some service or other. Suggest you read this: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/phone-scammers-target-pc-users-with-phony-vir us-reports/4198?tag=nl.e539 Someone called me a year or so ago with a similar scam and was extremely pushy. Bottom line - if you don't initiate the call, to YOUR tech support, don't give anyone access to your computer. If someone calls you with any message about your computer, or your internet service, hang up. If your internet service, call the number you were given when you signed up. Pat In Tucson
I too know nothing about WiFi. Is the download of a book free? I wouldn't think so. I gave my sister a wifi only Kindle for Christmas last year. She called Geek Squad and they set up wifi in her home because she had internet connection for her computer, it just wasn't wireless. The Geek Squad loved her Kindle and she loves not having to go to the library. I know others who use their libraries and I believe one uses his McDonald's. Our new Kroger's store even has a few tables and chairs close to the entry that is for wifi users. I have also seen car service areas that advertise wifi for their customers. So keep your eyes open for wifi in all areas. Marilyn On Sun, Nov 6, 2011 at 3:15 AM, ETM <etm1935@gmail.com> wrote: > Hi Jean, > > You also may not need much to set it up at home. Have had it for several years, 3 or 4? It uses our broadband and it works fine, as long as someone isn't 'using' the computer the MJ is plugged into. We have it on the less powerful of our two main computers. I have my gmail as the contact email, so when someone phones and we don't answer the voice message is left on my gmail account. That part is sort of crappy, but at least we know there was a call and can phone back if we can't understand the message. We all already have cell phones, already pay too much for those, so I saw no reason to keep paying 40 a month for the land phone. melissa On Sun, Nov 6, 2011 at 5:43 PM, Blondie Mock <ZooKeeperss@webtv.net> wrote: > Well, gang, made a leap of faith...After the last dr. visit and a clean > health record, my 1st stop was the Verizon show case, now have a new > Iphone-4, oh, that's fun, then signed up for wi-fi and its now > installed, but I am so far behind in anti- virus ware, its been 3 days > installing, (whew), now waiting to install my NETGEAR USB port, package > says can't until the updates are installed, ok, I wait some more! I had one of the original ones that plug into a computer that was on a dedicated computer. When that computer went bad, I ordered the new Magic Jack Plus that only uses the computer to register it and then it connects into a power supply, the phone, and a LAN cable. They both work very well, but the newer one is a lot cheaper on the electrical power to use. Bruce -- Registered Linux user number 482434.
