John- I expect that would be at the time, when my sister said they were at an apartment that had one house in between my grandmother Johnson and theirs. Grandma's house # was 323. Thanks!! Maybe, I will get these various houses sorted out! Neysa, Both my parents were born in Fergus Falls, MN. They lived there (in one house or another!) all of their single lives and all of their married lives. When my mother (Geda Johnson Moe) was growing up she lived in a house at 323 Bismarck Ave (Or street) This was changed during WW1, to Washington Ave. Getting rid of anything that sounded remotely German! The only house I remember living in, was my grandmother's house. That was at 608 West Bancroft. I am not sure that that was the house that my Dad (Phillip Moe) grew up in. After my grandmother died, the house was sold; my folks bought my Aunt's house - on the eastern end of Bancroft Ave. (I don't remember the address. - it was a stucco house, seems I remember the windows trim was a dark green. They lived next door to a family with the last name of "Leabo") My folks were married on Dec 1, 1917. My dad had to leave for the army so my mother lived with my grandma Johnson, until he returned. That house is no longer there. Quite some time, later, it was moved to 518 E. Gustavus. My sister says: After my dad returned home, they moved into an apartment above a store, on Lincoln Ave. She said that she thought that the store is now "Welander's Jewelry store. Then they and my sister moved to a small house on the North shore of Lake Alice (in town). There was a family named Brandt that lived right next door. When my sister was about 4 years old, they moved to a house on Bancroft Ave. (not my g'mother's house) When sister was about 7 years old, they built a house on Vernon Ave. (I don't have a street address for it) The next move was to an upstairs apartment on Washington Ave, just one door removed from G'ma Johnson's house. Her house number was 323, so this apartment could possibly have been 327. Some time later, I remember that another of my aunts (Mom's sister" lived in the house, mentioned above. We used to have our Christmas celebrations there. I remember them talking about a house, they called the "Cliffod House". I don't know if it was the name of the family who built the house, or the family that lived there, just before my folks moved in. Hmmm. Seems I knew (via my sister's and cousin's written down histories), than I thought I knew. I have 3 or 4 pictures of houses, but, no names on the backs! Thanks! Nancy, I did a quick lookup in the 1930 census in Fergus Falls and found Phillip and "Gyda" Moe living with children Ruth and Phillip Jr. at 329 Washington Ave. Census doesn't always show addresses but this did so there is a start anyway. My husband was working with the state archaeologist (in a volunteer group) and they opened a family crypt in a town near us. There had been some vandalism, and a family member was there to help identify the coffins, etc. They were old , and had broken and fallen apart. There were more people there than they had expected; the family member had a book about his family and was able to locate where servants had been buried with the family. Was very interesting. They usually tell the given name of the slave as well as their age and if they were Mulatto and or Melugeon. After the Civil War many of those former slaves took the last name of their owner. The Nanny of my great grandfather when told that the Slaves were free and she could leave, the answer she gave was." i have taken care of you from the day you were born and your wife can not do a good job in caring for you." She is buried with him in the same cemetery. Hi gang, A friend and I were talking about our ancestors having possibley owned "slaves" when they lived back on the East Coast. I had a relative bring several from Texas with him, then granted them freedom after arriving on the West Coast. I came home, and began looking for a way to find out who the "slaves" might have been? I found that records were kept, but not what kind and where do you access them? But on the internet the last few days, found a great site about the origins and history of "slavery", if you have questions about where or how this habit started you might enjoy this site: (http;//www.slavevoyages.org/tast/help/glossary.faces), its 12 page history that is in chronical order. Hope you enjoy the history given. So now I check for census at (http://www.MortalityCensus.com), becasue they began in 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880. BY 1850 SLAVE schedules were starting to be kept by the Feds. By 1860, slaves were still listed as personal property on the Census takers list of questions, of the owners, but a seperate census for slaves was also done, the questions it asked were the 1]name of owner, 2] # of slaves, 3] age of slave, sex and color, 4] fugitives from state, 5] No. manumitted,<released from> 6] physical limits, <blind, deaf, dumb, insane or idotic>7] #. slaves houses, 8] remarks.....by 1870 the Civil War had freed most slaves, so census taking after 1870 would be in the general population I would think?..Now another question has popped up, "What about INDENTURED servants" are they slaves??? Answer is no, they are self committed to a Male family heir, for limited terms of committment for financial reasons, mostly for the voyage from shore to shore or the price of their ticket to the New World. Then they worked off the "DEBIT" in a given number of years (included bed and board) if they lived to fulfill the agreement. The normal time was 3-7 yrs. Another site is the ISDSA site, sons and daughters of slave ancestors. And our own Rootsweb, had a site for "SLAVES/SLAVEOWNERS" at (http://www.userdb/rootsweb.com/slaves/). SO, I'm looking for sites that have posted names of slaves and or their owners. CAn you help? TIA. ~ Linda ~ Willow Creek,CA.
Apparently Grimes County, Texas definitely was a part of Montgomery County at one time. Montgomery County Genealogical Society has an email address and might be of help to you. information@mcgandhs.com. I didn't see a phone number. If they don't have the information you need, they might be able to tell you where to find it. Anyone have any suggestions where I might locate them? Beth, Neysa, Sorry about that. Fergus Falls is located in Minnesota. Ottertail county. It did have a library when I was a kid, so I suppose it's still there. I'll have to look it up. Tomorrow. I was on a Scrapbooking get-together over the weekend, and I am pretty tired. Beth, thanks for the hint! shalom, nancyT On 11/14/2011 7:15 PM, Neysa wrote: > Beth: Fergus Falls, what state? > Neysa > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Beth Bowling > To: gen-newbie@rootsweb.com > Sent: Monday, November 14, 2011 7:54 PM > Subject: Re: [GN] Odd question - want to find some houses. > > > Nancy, does Fergus Falls have a library?
