My Brother-in-law has a son from  his wife's first marriage, the Son has a child. What relationship is the Child to me (or my wife)? No formal adoption papers were ever started. To complicate this whole thing - - - Son of wife's 1st marriage has 2 children, each child has  a different mother. My F-I-L states they are "His left handed Grandchildren' Anyone with a better name for this relationship? John

I just joined Ancestry on the 14 day free trial and was amazed to find a my DEVLIN family on a family tree done by someone else!!! I had not researched them before..I am so happy. One actually can do the n-cousin x-removed in your head. Two people count the number of generations back to their first common ancestor; the least number generations less two is the 'n' and the difference of the two generation counts is 'x' the number of removes. So George is 7 generations back to the common ancestor; and Mary is 5 generation back to the common ancestor; then George and Mary are third cousins twice removed.
