    3. Rootsweb does not pass through attachments as a safety feature to protect subscribers. Send your attachments directly to the person requesting it. You might want to use the list to notify that the item will be sent directly to the poster. Most can locate the address of the poster by doing a reply all rather than a reply. The list uses a prepend and addresses the list as default rather than the poster AND the list. These functions were directly requested by majority of the subscribers. Elaine

    3. Thanks so much, Joy. I am searching for a record of my relative, Harold H. MILLER, born 1916 in Pennsylvania, that was killed 16 Aug 1944 in France. I found, what I think is his, enlistment, but do you have any idea where I could find the record of his being killed in France? I really would love that record. Thanks again. Maxine

    2. Les Hardy
    3. Anyone using a spreadsheet to do transcribing of census or parish records may be interested in a free application I developed a few years ago. GenScriber is a desktop application, designed for transcribing genealogy documents from images of census registers, church/parish records etc. It does not have any of the problems spreadsheets have. Such as changing dates. We used it in-house for about 18 months, and found it so useful, it seemed a shame to keep it to ourselves. I released to the public 5 months ago. GenScriber is free. It does not need installing. It will even run from a pendisk. Just unzip it and run it. If anyone is interested, it can be downloaded from http://www.genscriber.com A login is required to download, but the registration is simple. It is only there to keep spammers away. Les Hardy

    1. [GN] Ancestry - Sign Up
    2. marilyn E B
    3. Long before I had an Ancestry Subscription, I had an Ancestry Membership so that I could search their records and use their free material. Nothing that required money but I could search and compile lists of possibilities. Right now I do not have a subscription but I can still go to my tree, search for possibilities, and use their free material. This type of membership is at no cost. When their freebies come along all I have to do is go sign in to my account. A membership also means you can receive their various newsletters which often have great tips for your searches. Once you have set up an account, all you need to do is sign in when they run their freebies. If you do their 14 day free trial and want to cancel just be sure to call before 14 days roll around to cancel the trial. 3. John if I am reading this correctly, the BIL is likely your wife's brother. Now the son is from another marriage/relationship of the mother; so no blood relationship to your BIL, your wife or you. However, blood relationship is very often not how we think of those we love. I have two grandchildren that would be considered my son's stepchildren but to him they are his children and to me they are my grandchildren. Now my genealogy program will list them as step - whatever. 3. Thank you Carolyn and a big thanks as well to Pam . What I found on Ancestry was a "public family tree" that included my Devlin family (my mom's mothers family). It starts with my grandmother and goes back to her grandaprents. They were all born in Ireland and then emmigrated to NYC in the late 19thc. SO - this tree cites the actual names and dates and census records, NYC vital record numbers. I live in NYC so for those I can go downtown and look at then myself. What I am very interested to learn (as is everyone with Irish roots) is "where" in IRE they came from. I found an IREsite that charges about $9.00 to view a single record online...$9 each view - crazy when you are just starting out :) and uncertain. I will start here in NYC and try and find something that has birthplace on it. I am going to look for the marriage record..I know the date and church courtesy of this "tree". It took me to another screen that has a thumbnail of the record. Click on that or below where it says View Original Image. That will bring up the image of the record. At the top there is a green line that says View All Print Order etc. When you click on the print, you have the option to Print only the image or print the image and the source. 3. Once you see the actual record, do a right click and "save as" to your desktop. I have found quite a few records and this seem to be the best way. Then you can print them, or add the data to your program. I have not tried to print from Ancestry, but will see if I can do that and let you know.
