I just aged a good 20 years -- of course one would remember Gus (Sarge) -- seems like yesterday, but I know it wasn't. He is one of the memorable ones who helped all us newbies. Annette, thank you for your note with its words of encouragement. As in your case, our faith and prayer are our consolation at this time. Sometimes fear takes over and all of us meet at the church for a prayer time. That is, those who live near each other. We add you and your granddaughter and family to our prayer list. Thanks very much for writing. We have so many helpful members who are willing to help others that many of us have received that record, document, or news item from searching where we do not have a paid subscription and then asking if a list member could send us the item we found. I often wonder if others know that many of the paid sites can be searched without a paid subscription. My bookmarks bar has Ancestry, Footnote, and Genealogy Bank which are paid sites plus Family Search and RootsWeb. I also get newsletters from all of these and often find just the hint I need for find a missing link. I think the newsletters, blogs and other helpful sites should be part of everyone's guide to improving their searches. OK, I will get off the soapbox. Listmembers, three folks have contacted me off-list about my lack of response to their efforts of helping with my posted dilemma of the moment. One of those folks pointed out that I have posted off and on but am two weeks behind in responses to email offers of help. One person told me of my arrogance and insulting ways. Let me say to all who read this list on regular basis: Our teenage granddaughter diappeared from home and did not let her parents know where she was where she was for weeks. To say the least, we have been frightened, heart-sick, distraught, worried, etc. Now that we know where she is, that she was not kidnapped or worse, things are calming down. And so am I. It should be noted that during these weeks, genealogy and computers have seldom been of interest. At our insistence, none of these facts regarding our minor granddaughter were published in any newspaper, so no further information will be found. IMHO, it is always sound advice to ask for explanation before jumping to conclusions. To those offended by my lack of response to their offers of help, sincere regrets; I did not intend to offend.
