    3. Fred... Interesting that you and I both were in a movie theater that fateful day, December 7, 1941 and had similar experiences with the manager stopping the film. (We called it a "Picture Show"....not "movie"). I don't remember the name of the show though anymore. juanita ks > I was in a movie theater when suddenly the movie stopped an and > announcer from the theater began "the President of the United > States------ Announcer went on to describe Pearl Harbor and that we > are now at war. > > Memorable moments of one's life. > > Fred, Sr. > > -----Original Message----- > From: gen-newbie-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:gen-newbie-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of > bruce.mckown@wavelinx.net > Sent: Wednesday, December 07, 2011 5:48 PM > To: gen-newbie@rootsweb.com > Subject: [GN] Pearl Harbor--Who remembers? > > How many remember what they were doing that day so many years ago. 3. I remember perfectly what was going on that Sunday, December 7th in 1941. It was the first time I met my future husband. He and my one male cousin had been friends in a nearby town and had driven the 50 miles or so - just to be going somewhere. My cousin suggested stopping by my apartment house where I'd been living for a few years while working at my first big job after graduating high school. I had gone to a morning movie and before it ended the management stopped the show and announced Pearl Harbor had been attacked. I had heard of Pearl Harbor but didn't know much about it. We knew it meant war....the guys were 20 yrs. old, had good jobs but figured they'd probably enlist rather than wait to be drafted into the Army. We went for a long afternoon drive....got lost on Frank Phillips' Wool-A-Roc ranch west of Bartlesville, OK. A few hours later the two fellows went home and the weekend ended. The next morning my boss at the oil company where I worked called of the office employees to his private office where he had a small radio. We all listened intently to President Roosevelt announce the "day that will live in infamy". My husband-to-be and I had a whirlwind courtship....he enlisted in the Navy and 2012 we'd have celebrated our 70th wedding anniversary. Sad to say we weren't allowed that privilege and he died a few weeks ago. We had a wonderful nearly 70 years together.....my parents were apprehensive about their daughter marrying a sailor but later agreed he was "one in a million". Oh, how I miss him. December 7th always had a special place in our heart .... both because of the terrible war that ensued but also it was the beginning of a wonderful life we've had....with no regrets. juanita ks > How many remember what they were doing that day so many years ago. 3. Maxine -- You might want to read the links on the page I just sent you. There is a lot of information there about what is needed and WHO can order. Here is another page from that site - just for genealogy research. It might have more info. http://www.archives.gov/research/genealogy/ Joy > anyone ordered the Pension/military records from NARA online? > .how/where do you send it online? . > Maxine

    3. Maxine -- http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/ Select Launch the eVetRecs System to start your request Online. Then you will have a pop-up screen to follow the instructions. I did not go further, as I did not want to start the process. This is much different than when I ordered. They have changed their site a lot. You can also choose to Download form SF-180 to Mail or Fax your request. You might want to do that, anyway, just to see what info is needed for your request. There is a charge for the records and when I did it, I set a limit of how much I wanted to pay. My great-grandfather was in the Civil War and I received quite a few copies of records, but there was so much more. If I wanted the rest, it would have cost me $175 more than what I paid. Do not remember what I set the limit for. Good luck. Joy >> anyone ordered the Pension/military records from NARA online? >> .how/where do you send it online? . >> Maxine

    3. Thanks Juanita, They ask me to select "next of kin" etc. which I am not. I wanted records of my second cousin. Is there another form when we want the information for genealogy or are we supposed to lie? I appreciate the reply. 3. G'Day I have been following the comments closely. Fred, like you & Yvonne, we have had a recent situation like yours. My 16 year old granddaughter, has also gone 'walkabout'. Its a strange situation to be in, on the one hand they are too young to vote, they are still minors in the eyes of the law, yet, they can leave home, get governments young homeless allowance, and we as family can do nothing. We know she is still in the state but not where & with whom.We have one powerful tool on our side PRAYER & Faith In the time, I have been on this list, I have felt very humble at the caring concern and genuine need to help from many. It often feels like one big family to me. I Love Christmas, sadly, its a time when feelings are fully alive. Fred, I value & appreciate your kindness & courtesy. Hope all works out well Annette Aksenov

    3. Fred I'm stunned that anyone would take you to task for "non-response" -- you've always been most courteous to me, and, I'd say generally "timely" in those responses! If you weren't? Oh, well, you must be "out of town" or "out of sorts," -- either of which will get you a pardon <G>. There are people on this list to whom I've provided information over the past years who have NEVER responded in any way at all, and of course, the occasionally cranky "Well, I already knew THAT, why don't you send me something I don't know." Except for a few who are now on my "do not help" list, I just ignore this sort of behavior. It goes with the territory. I think most of us understand that everyone on this list has a "real" life, that interferes with our time and, yes, interest in genealogy. Those who are so uptight that they don't get it, well, that's what the delete button is for. Now, if you have someone who is really rotten to you, send me their addresses (privately, please) and I'll make sure they are on MY "do not help" list. In the world of "it takes a village" this would be known as "shunning." I'm glad your granddaughter is home, and safe! I hope things stay on the level now.
