    2. Where Is The World's Largest Family History & Genealogy Library Located? According to the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, it is the "Largest library of its kind in the world." The collection includes over 2.4 million rolls of microfilmed genealogical records; 727,000 microfiche; 356,000 books, serials, and other formats; over 4,500 periodicals and 3,725 electronic resources.(08 DEC 2011). The Library of Congress is billed as the largest library in the world, "by shelf space and number of books." 3. The files that were removed from Keith were cookies and other items connected with signing in to sites. Keith was very unhappy about having to redo them. His computer was not disabled, I've known no one to mention a computer being disabled by CCleaner, but it does clean cookies unless you instruct it not to or to delete some but not others. I use Roboform for passwords so cleaning those files would not be an issue for me. Though I admit that I do keep them and have unchecked the items in CCleaner. 3. Shari; I have no idea what you are running for security on your system now, and What I would recommend might require you to remove whatever it is you are running. As a new system most come preloaded with a AV program that includes a subscription include in the price of the PC. If you already have a paid for AV program or suite, you may just be better off keeping it till the subscription ends, or you have a problem. Until than, If your not having any problem why change? You could download & install Bel Arc advisor and it should give you a list of installed software which you could than foreword to me privately. No need to waste list space by copying and pasting. Depending on what you have My choices would be MSE(a/v), free, Malwarebytes or Superantispyware, both have free versions, CCleaner, free version available, and I suggest if you haven't already done so update to IE9. The default win7 firewall is more than capable in the none corporate world and a lot less problematic for those less the geeky. The rest of your security pretty much relies on you following some simple rules,,,Don't open unsolicited emails or attachements, Save all downloads to a download file or your desktop and scan before using or running. Be wary of .zip, n.exe, .php , .pdf files you haven't requested....and lastly,,,follow the instructions for making a backup as provided for in win7. -----Original Message----- From: Shari B Sent: Thursday, December 08, 2011 1:57 PM To: gen-newbie@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GN] Replacement for Ad Aware Oh, jeepers, don't anyone stop giving computer advice! 3. Woody; Truth be known, I haven't given it a look or even a second thought, as I sandbox much of what comes in on my systems. I have been much to busy taking care of the grand kids as of late and have not had much time to pursue the conundrums related to the IE9. Just been happy that it does what I need to do and does better than prior iterations hehe. Maybe tonight I may investigate your query and possible stimulate some of my grey matter to something else than playing the guitar all night. As far as CCleaner,,,well yeah, it's earlier versions did rely on a pretty hefty knowledge of what you needed and what you didn't need, and many of the choice that were present in the earlier versions could render a system unable to boot. That problem has pretty much been obliterated in the newest releases as those options are not even available to the user. On a related note: In the past one could view cookies and easily figure out their source and whether one needed to retain or delete certain cookies. 2. Someone posted Keith's e-mail saying he used Wise as a registry cleaner in lieu of CCleaner. Wise is the one that deleted Office Pro files from my computer and I had to reinstall those files. And AOL messed up showing how cookies have changed in appearance. I'm showing them again here without AOL messing it up: EXAMPLE: Before: woody@ancestry[1].txt Now: WPCDXCB7.txt Woody ========================================== BogusWoody@aol.com writes: I, too, use CCleaner as a registry and file cleaner, and it has been very effective over the years. In the cleanup section, I unchecked those files I don't want removed, such as history and cookies, and those I'm not sure of. On a related note: In the past one could view cookies and easily figure out their source and whether one needed to retain or delete certain cookies. Has anyone else noted that recently installed cookie file names are now gobbledygook and difficult to determine their source without going into the confusing text portion and searching for a domain name? 3. Les: I agree as a linux user ( or any of it's derivatives Ubunti etc) you are spared many of the pitfalls of the windows user, but linux is far from being as well supported or as user friendly for Joe average user. Linux use is a must for those who have to maintain systems or cross/platform servers. Having said that, it was not my intent to dissuade anyone from helping other users, but to bare in mind the choice of OS that they are using and to make decisions based on that. The average windows users security needs are completely different from those you or I may need. Couple that with a few budgetary requirements for those on fixed or limited incomes and not into the why's and wherefores of how and OS works can be the most frustrating thing we have to deal with. I Personally don't have any problems with windows and it is especially well suited and convenient for my multimedia uses and I am willing to deal with its shortcomings. That being said I certainly understand the pluses and minus of several other OS's and am sufficiently adept at using them when it is necessary to accomplish a task that they are better suited for than windows. I only took issue with your dismissal of Malware bytes, a well recognized and highly thought of tool based on the fact a user got a false positive , and didn't offer a substitute that works better in a windows environment. A comment like that could have the undesirable effect on those less knowledgeable by not using it at all, and thereby leaving them open to other problems less benign than a false positive. Maybe I'm wrong, but I try to keep in mind that when helping others it is best to error on the side of caution and do no further harm . Than I still have a chance of recovering the system. To loose someone's Data is on my list only as and avoid at all cost item. I am a Linux user. I don't have your problems. I just help those that do. I can always stop.
