We have it set up for our office computers, and once you "train" your dragon, it works great. I have a co-worker that has an accent that tends to trip it up a little, but for the most part, it works well. I had an incident where I thought that I had put it to sleep while I answered the phone, and it typed everything that I said. For this application that you are thinking about, it should work great... George and others, my grand daughter is getting the same computer for Christmas and I am going to walk her through the set up. Pam, I have Nuance's Dragon Natural Speaking v11. As I learn to use it, I am astonished at the fact it actually does type whatever it thinks it hears. I use Office '07 and use Dragon now and then for email, and always when a letter needs to be written. For me, there is a sharp learning curve as my southern accent does not always produce sounds with which Dragon is familiar although I have recorded, tested and recognized as having southern accent; hence, the learning curve is that of my becoming able to train Dragon to recognize my speech patterns. There are abundant aids to use of Dragon, a regular newsletter that does contain useful tips, a tutorial, and I seem to recall there is a workbook----not sure about the workbook, though, as my son uses an advanced version of Dragon, and he might have given me the workbook. The product is easy to learn to use unless one has a _different_ pattern of speech or pronounced regional accent. With practice, even those items can be overcome. Hi Rudy, I don't use Windows Live Mail but I did Google for you and the following site indicates that it's nearly impossible to do. http://www.webdevelopersnotes.com/blog/change-windows-live-mail-layout-colors/ If this doesn't answer your question. Try Googling and asking the question why you can't. Wish I could have been of more help. I use RootsMagic now, but have used PAF in the past and felt that the Companion which costs money, maybe $10, very small amount, is essential to add some of the nicer items to the tree. Barbara, I am a member of GN. I have a copy of the PAF Companion that I have hardly used. If you would like I could send it to you via snail mail. It will make your PAF experience better. If interested email me at home. Barbara My policy is to enter names as they occur. So, you have a "birth certificate" (really? -- not a christening record or something?), that gives the European spelling. When listing his birth, you list it that way. When you get to Ellis Island (immigration) you list him with the "new" name, giving the actual record from Ellis Island as your source. I don't know about PAF, but in The Master Genealogist, you can have as many variations on a name as you can think of. You can make them time sensitive, as in "before xxx date he was known as Samuel Grigginhaufer" and "after xxx1 date he was known as Samuel Griggs." Somehow, it needs to be listed as a name. Notes are not where you'd look for that person. Ordinarily, the names at Ellis Island came directly from ship's records and emigration permits from the "losing" country, and therefore written when the person got on the boat, and as the person's name was "usually" spelled in the country of origin. So, there may be records in the country of origin with the "newer" name, rather than the birth records. Well, I just downloaded PAF and see that you cannot do what I said. Darn. Well, I guess you can put the old and new names in the "also known as" slot. I don't see how you can put much in this program at all, except the very basic BMDB information. Hmm. Sometimes, of course, birth records were written in Latin, or in bureaucratic language, so may differ for that reason. Hope this helps. If you are a member of Ebates (www.ebates.com) or if you join it (free) and go through them to get an Ancestry subscription, there is currently a 20% *ebates*! When I recently renewed my subscription, I did go through the Ebates site and while at first I did not receive the 20% (of the price), after contacting ebates, I was given it - and 20% of the cost of an Ancestry subscription is a tidy bit! Certainly worth checking into, IMHO.
