    3. I love steampunk! But then I've been reading science fiction since I learned to read. My dad loved all the classic science fiction authors, so I read them when I was small. I also love a good mystery and horror story. My new laptop came with a program called Blio and I am exploring what free books are out there for it. I love a good book, held in my hands so might not use it a lot, but I was thinking of all the genealogy books out there that are downloadable. They take up less room on the laptop that is for sure. LOL Susan Boise, Idaho, USA -----Original Message----- From: gen-newbie-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:gen-newbie-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of ETM Sent: Sunday, January 01, 2012 12:06 PM To: gen-newbie@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GN] Kindle Books I use Kindle for PC as my main bookshelf, but I don't often read on the laptop unless I am waiting for something to arrive in email and read while waiting. I prefer the eReaders for reading. I have the Kindles (3 and Touch) and Nook (original, Touch and Color which can be rooted with a micro card to change it into a tablet), a Galaxy Tab 7, and a Sony original and Touch, they are all loaded with different books and always charged. I tend to read bios, true stories, cozy mysteries and have recently discovered time travelers and other paranormal, and I actually do enjoy steampunk. The reason I found these additional genre is because of the eReaders and free or dollar books. I would never have discovered them in a brick and mortar book store. Currently I am listening to the audiobook bio by Isaacson of Steve Jobs, reading the second in the Outlander series, and reading The Last Boy about Mickey Mantle. I read two Christmas related novels during Christmas week. I have an iPad 1, have decided to spend no more money until the iPad 3 is out. I will skip the second generation, but will be very interested in what the third generation will offer. I do love the eReaders and like the tablets just okay. I prefer the laptop to a tablet. I do stream movies and TV shows on the tablets and that gives them a reason for being. I like watching movies on a tablet when I am in the recliner. Nicer that the big TV. I don't text, but I do use email on my iPhone and iPod Touch. I rarely think of the tablets for that purpose. Elaine

    3. Remember that those of us in Metro-DC are not restricted to our local library. All seem to offer reciprocal borrowing privileges. I am a member of the DC Martin Luther King system, the Farifax Library and need to get into the Alexandria Library in person to activate my privileges (that may never occur). I also am a susbscriber to the Free Library and posted that address earlier. Others here should check, they may well be able to access the larger city libraries as a resident of the same state. 3. I even have borrowing privileges from the Philadelphia Library. Fact is I do prefer to own and hate the burden of having to read within a specified period of time. I read more than one book at a time. I do not want the pressure of a 21 day limit. Free Phillie is at http://www.freelibrary.org/ I agree with Wayne, Pixel of Ink also is an excellent newsletter about free books. It covers ePubs and Kindle as does Books on the Knob. I have over 1500 books on my Kindle in subject areas I like. Very few cost me money, so it's a matter of reading those blogs each day. I do not use the Nook as much as the Kindle but it also is loaded with books and many came free or at minimal cost, $.99 is a popular figure for many independent authors. I like buying from smashwords and supporting them. It's a great website. http://www.smashwords.com I discovered Alice Duncan there. I love her books. Check her out. 3. I recently installed the Kindle Reader on my laptop and I am enjoying being able to have a book when I have run out of books on hand. I must say the ereader from Kindle was easy to download and use. I have several books waiting to be read. It was wonderful to find that many of the older books are free. I have been going back and revisiting old friends. Some are just as good as they were many years ago. Others seem to drag and do not move at the fast pace I find in today's novels. I took a trial membership in Amazon Prime to see if I could take advantage of the extra free books you can receive with a membership in Prime. I was disappointed that these free books will only download to a Kindle. I have wondered how many books you can have downloaded at one time and how to delete the ones you no longer want. I may try to get books from my library in the next few days as they have a good selection of recent books available. * *I have delayed doing this due to the fact I have an addiction to reading and once I start a book the world around me fades far away. Happy New Year. 3. To Connie and "Everyone" who has replied to my query concerning finding free books. I can't believe the wonderful comments and help that this topic generated. Because of "all of you." I have put into my favorites the sites you have recommended and the blogs and have my first "free book" and am like a child in the candy store! I love books - my world, and it looks like your world as well, would be so empty and dull without a good book to feast upon. Like many of you I also said that I would never want an e-reader because I honestly do love the feel of a great book in my hand. But! Like many of you my old hands hurt when I try to hold onto a big heavy book for too long. However, I will not give up going to the library on occasion and bringing home a "real" book so I don't forget that wonderful experience of reading and feasting the old fashion way. And! There is nothing greater than walking into my city library to pick out a book. There is that certain library smell and atmosphere that simply feels wonderful to me. Hey, with my Kindle and my city Library I can have it both ways. Thanks again, you all are such good people on this list. I love you and wish you a Happy New Year. 3. I have learned that my Harold H. MILLER 1916-1944 that was killed in action in France 18 Aug 1944 was a paratrooper. He and five other army men parachuted into the Nice Airport, France to de-mine the airport of Nice. There is a memorial plaque at the Nice, France airport. There is also a group picture of the 596th. It is a long picture and I cannot for the life of me get my printer to 'remember' to rotate the picture so I could get the entire picture. (I don't do photo's so I do not have photo paper etc). I went in to my printing preferences to change from 'portrait' printing, but it still prints in portrait and chops off a lot of the men on the right of the picture. I use a Canon ip3600 printer and still use win XP. Any suggestions? Thanks, Maxine

    3. I said that, too....bit found myself doing my daily bible devotion ar ESV online, reading most news online, etc. so it dawned on me that I may read more and use little bits of available free time if I have an eReader as it eliminates the drive to/from stores, the library, etc. to get books. Plus, I do like the added convenience of cloud storage and all the freebies that came with my amazon Prime subscription which I had anyway...so, I began hinting I really like the Kindle Fire in late November... 3. Tell Amazon you thought it was free and didn't want it enough to pay for it. They will probably reverse the charge. Elaine he great artists of the world are never Puritans, and seldom even ordinarily respectable. --Mencken Hello Yvonne On Saturday, December 31, 2011, you wrote > Happy New Years! > I am looking for good free sites that offer free books that I can > download to my Kindle (Christmas present from my daughter). > I thought that I was ordering a free book from > Amazon but found ended up > paying for it. 3. Another good list to get on is Pixel of Ink: FreeKindleBooks@PixelofInk.com. Similar to Books on the Knob, but generally has several different books each day. I never can finish a book in the 21 days my library allows and they don't let you renew. So if the book is popular I have to go on a list behind others who were waiting for my rental to stop. It drives me insane that I can read a book I own in a couple of days but can't read a borrowed library book in three weeks. Connie's suggestions were excellent for people who want freebies.
