Hello All, A few years ago I compiled some U.S. genealogy guides by topic and posted them here. They have been updated a few times, but it's been awhile since I last posted them. So I will be posting them here today. I hope you find them useful. Feel free to post any of them to genealogy newsgroups or forums you are subscribed to. Happy searching. Regards, Joe
Marilyn, Thanks for a great, insightful post! A couple of years ago my computer (it had the "Edsel" of operating systems-Millenium) was hit with a virus. Elaine and a gentleman from CA worked with us for days trying to set things right. Jack, an EE, worked with computers his entire career and still, he needed help from GN. He got it for DAYS. My intro. to GN was over 11 yrs. ago, just before Jack's heart attack. The support I rec'd from GN was awesome, useful and comforting. I regret to admit I was a party to one of those periods of discord. I think I learned from it and beg pardon of anyone I offended. Now, if anyone on this list needs help with Catholic Philadelphia I will try! Happy New Year. Happy New Year to all! My husband and I BOTH received a Kindle for Christmas - so far I am just frustrated with mine and Hubby hasn't even opened the box, says he will when I learn to use mine. I have not found a "how to" yet, It is just a PLAIN Kindle. Any help will be appreciated. There are many on this list who have been here longer than me but we have lost many members for many reasons. Some really fantastic members are doing their genealogy in the clouds and probably have brick walls crumbling with continuous happy dances. There are undoubtedly those who are no longer physically able to join our conversations. Others may not have the same interest they once had, I have a cousin who falls into that group. We have had our periods of discord and discontent and during these periods we lose many, some of whom were responsible for some of our best teaching. I have longed hope they would once again become active. IMHO many of us have just become to use to letting/expecting others to answer queries. We forget how easily the newbies get discouraged and offering an encouraging word might be just what is needed to keep them active. I have long believed that the more that search the more we will all find. That is if you will all keep it coming through the group. Actually I find it much better when it is a reply to the original message as this keeps the conversation threaded together in gmail. Someone many years ago smacked my hands verbally several times to get me to start using gmail and for genealogy I love all the advantages. I do get a little frustrated when topics are changed within a conversation and the subject is not changed. We all have our particular set of frustrations. While my actual techniques for genealogy have improved by leaps and bounds; my use of the computer will probably always be in the toddler range for many things. I do not apologize for asking for toddler steps as there may be others who need those also. We each progress at our own pace, leaping through some areas and lagging way behind in others. Holidays are almost always a time for open O/T messages. Elaine will usually post when the list is open and Elaine I apologize for often rushing the time. For some things we do have a sister list: memorylane@rootsweb. If you have memories of various times, events, food and etc. you want to discuss join memory lane. They are a wonderful group and you will find many of us there. Yes, things have changed and we are not all here constantly as we were at one time. For instance when I first joined the list, I had something strange happen to my aol email. The first thing I did was to send an emergency message to GN. Within seconds and I mean seconds, I had help coming at me from every way it could be sent. Pat was sending me help on IM and two or three others were sending emails. I had hit something to change the order my email was appearing. In less than 15 minutes everything was back to normal. To any who remember that and helped me, I still say thank you. We do need revitalizing in some way and maybe some of us need to not spend so much time on FB. Note I said US and that does include ME. Moving .gifs are not moving in my e-mails. They also fail to move in any messages I send. They are moving when I open them in Irfanview. I have Win 7 and Outlook 2010 I don't remember changing a setting but must have (I plead old age). I hadn't been paying close attention, as Kindle is not (yet) on my must-have list, but this weekend went to visit the g-kids (and their parents, of course). The eight and the ten year old (boys) got Kindle-fire for Christmas. Whew! Learning curve anyone? Thanks to the comments on this list, I was able to help a little bit (I was helping the Mom, not the kids) figure out the vagaries of "Kindle Owners Library" as well as accessing books through their public library, and the whole "cloud" thing. They have "amazon prime" so more books are free to "borrow." And maybe "keep" -- still unsure about some of that. I'm going to take all the additional information from these emails and post it to them for their use. No, they don't do genealogy, but they sure do read a lot of books! By the bye, the only thing I didn't like about the Kindle Fire is the weight. One of the reasons I'd like a Kindle is that it's easier to read than a large, fat, book. This was no great improvement. So, if I do get one, it'll be the more basic model. Too bad they don't make the basic model with a screen size like the Fire! Someone behind list was very nice and took Max right to the name. Fact is it was my intention to make Max expand that page herself and find her relative. Max won again and was helped right to the final spot. Did anyone here read this thread and learn anything from it or will all of you also have to ask for help should the same thing come up in your research? How many people here use a browser they like and google as a search engine? Do you want to explain why to the other subscribers and do the other subscribers want to sit and read and ask questions if they don't understand? This is a teaching list. It helps, but teaching is far more important than helping people avoid doing their own research. ps I use Google as if it is a browser. I dont use the IE browser box ever. I use the Google Page as a browser and it works just fine. I seldom get messages of NOT FOUND or NOTHING FOUND on Google searches and I can go to the Images and Books of Google and the translate very easily. I dont have it as my homepage but I have it as a favorite that I created. I learned from this list how to get it at the top of the favorites and I love it. I dont use Chrome, I dont use Firefox. I dont use Thunderbird and I have no problems with my computer. I have never have had a problem with a link posted on this list. Seems to me that some listers explore and download and dont know why or what they will get from whatever it is that they are downloading. Perhaps they should keep their computers as virgin as it was delivered to them! And they wouldnt have so many problems. My opinion. Now, back to lurking. I had the older Kindle (about 3 years old, maybe) which I gave to my daughter and grandkids when I got the Fire. I think the Fire may have a different screen than my old one.
