    3. Hey Ellen, Wow! That would have been a wonderful boost for the family. Also, thanks for the History lesson - makes me aware of what I don't know. Now, on my Moser line it has been said they left Germany because of the Catholic Church and when they left they had to leave their money as well which amounted to $12,000,000.00. Looks like I've lost all around doesn't it? Love these family folklore's. On 1/5/2012 1:29 PM, bruce.mckown@wavelinx.net wrote: > Yvonne Strong--Wish he were of the Osage Tribe. 2. A brother to my great grand mother never married. A fact because the "kin" said so. Also said that the court clerk lied when they issued a marriage license for him (age about 29+0 and the girl was almost 16. Guess someone just validated a document but all was well the old boy was only married about 4 months and there were divorced papers and she asked that her maiden name be restored. (We were at the court house and they pulled the old records for us.) Then there was this great aunt who waited a year+ to marry a man that they all agreed was the father of the daughter that somehow happened along before the wedding. The reason: A fact as stated by family honor, these two were not where they could find a minister (as history tells us this did happened in colonial days however not during this time period). However, this was in MO and the court house even falsied documens according to the family honor. Love these story but sure can tend toward a big BIG roar when mentioned. FAMILY HONOR. ellen Ah, yes, the beloved "family tradition" as the end-all (and substitute) > for > the "truth."

    3. Oh the family "stuff". I had been told the story of my great great grandfather who married a black lady after his first wife died and was therefore ostracized by the old family. I was never able to find much about him until a few years ago and then I found out that he had actually married a Black Irish lady far different from the story the family told me. At this point I was able to find more information and this led to finding out that I had cousins in whose home I had been to do repair work in the early 60's and did not know they were related. Unfortunately it was too late to ask questions as by this time they had all passed away and that was a shame to me that I missed the opportunity to learn more.I think the other reason the family stuck to their story was that this lady had been a Roman Catholic and that did not sit well with an old Presbyterian family..........LOL.....boy would they dislike me too as I became a High Anglican. Thanks Marilyn and Pat for bringing up the "family tradition" * Jim Hope* On 05/01/2012 10:22 AM, Kith-n-Kin wrote: > Ah, yes, the beloved "family tradition" as the end-all (and substitute) for > the "truth." > >

    3. This one is actually very recent, and about my grandfather. A first cousin had been doing the genealogy of my paternal family for some time. She had my grandfather listed as Rufus Marion. As a matter of fact, the Marion was a "family" name, so I went with it, and he always signed his name Rufus M. Everyone else said it was a fact. Everyone except one person, my Dad. He said he thought sure his Dads name was Rufus Marvin. This year when Ancestry had their military WWII database free, I poured over it trying to find Grandpa's service this time. He never talked about his service at any length, which made it hard to find anything. I finally found him registered under Rufus N. When I searched more carefully for his ship (he was Navy), I found him with the name Rufus Marvin Brock. All of his records except his registration was under the middle name of Marvin. My Dad was right! I've been at this for over 20 years and I still found a mistake about someone I knew very well. I wish my Dad was here so I could share it. 3. If you have those stories that have been passed down through the years; do you take them as they are or do you validate the facts? I spent time yesterday looking for the answer to a friend's dilemma. Family said that a ggg grandmother was one surname and some online information gave another surname. She insisted she was right because that was what the family said. Actually they were both right and it all boiled down to how exact she wanted to be. The person in question was raised by her maternal grandparents and the only place this was found was on the 1860 census. A legal adoption was unlikely in that time period but every step needs to be documented as thoroughly as possible. In my own family I have made some members unhappy because I proved we are not direct descendants of a certain Civil War General. Hey, the man never had any biological children. Much less a son. Have fun with family lore and tell us about some that you have either validated or debunked. 3. Joe, Thanks so much for all the links! I used to be much more active on gen-newbie but DH's health issues took priority. In looking back with my research I haven't done much in the last 6 years - but the "bug" is still with me. It is simply amazing how much more info is on the 'net nowadays. Just a cursory look the other day on familysearch netted me two more co-lateral family members that I will have to flesh out a bit more. Again, thanks for the links, Joe! Shari

    3. I have many of those stories in my family. The one that comes to mind is the story of how my great grandfather's brother died. The story is that the family had been living on the local reservation in the 1890s and the boy (5 years old) had appendicitis but because the river was flooded they could not get him to a doctor and he died. This was a REALLY difficult story to research. I first looked to see if I could find where they were living. I had no luck - they did not own land on the reservation and were most likely renting land and few, if any, records were kept for rentals. So I felt like I was never going to be able to do anything with this story. Then I realized I could look at the river conditions. I did not think it would be likely for that river to flood that time of year but I looked anyway. Sure enough the river was flooded. Which leads me to believe parts of the story are true. However, the story went further and we will never know if this part is true. A few days after the boy died Indians came down the river in boats with food and clothes for the family to wear to the funeral. Just shows that there are some stories (or parts of stories) that you can research and prove and some you can't. 3. Ah, yes, the beloved "family tradition" as the end-all (and substitute) for the "truth." I have a cousin who wrote (or "compiled" as he would say) a lengthy book on three ancestor families. I agreed to "edit" the book. About once a month a question would go back to him, "where did this information come from, and how valid is the source?" The answer invariably was "family tradition." Well, ok, but it was placed in the book as hard fact. A lot of research and bit of editing gave a good result. In some cases, "family tradition" held sway, properly cited, of course, but in most, the "truth" was somewhere else. The resulting book, although with a few errors (anyone ever find one without errors?) is a good, readable, and useful, family history! The biggest problem here, I think, is making decisions, or assumptions, based on those traditions, rather than treating them as "clues." If a researcher blindly follows a line, pushing and shoving the evidence to "make it fit" with some family tradition (of being related to some famous or infamous person, for example), s/he not only fails the primary test of a professional genealogist (whether amateur or not), but also rules out some very interesting possibilities for the real "rest of the story." Thanks for bringing this up, Marilyn, a good reminder for us all! 3. Hi gang, Perhaps having a rool call of the alphabet and asking how folks found the info. used , would help the beginners find out how to break down the brick walls of genealogy and help each other...in the begining we all "lurked", listened and ask a few shy questions, then as our feet got "wet" we asked more in depth questions. I've done genealogy the "hard" way, by snail mail up to 1998, love that one can ask mind numbing questions of the grur's here and get tried and tested answers and or link's that really do get the hunt going. I only belonged to 2 lists for 10 yrs. or more and have learned a lot and helped by passing on the knowledge to relatives and other new-bies, just this week, got a response from a grandaughter to a cousin of mine, she didn't know of my existance even. So post on lists you belong to, many find you by the archive's of these lists...usually at Christmas, when the list is so very quiet, I get out my "library" and post items on the list for the newbies, and hope that it helps the seniors remember some of the older sites that may have a hidden family member, refreshing one's mind, isn't a crimal act, its a kind one. As we each find another name in our ancestoral log, and older dates, we need to keep pursuit of the names of times long gone, years that are just surfacing in the internet, each year there are many volumes of books that are documented and archived, just for us...so use "google.com" and happy "trails" to you. I started last year with 1 unknown family name, found 26 others, and connect 3 to my ancestrial surname! Found the line of 4 families back across the "Pond", becaused I asked..so ask your questions and then do your "Homework". ~ Linda ~ Willow Creek,CA.
