    3. We never could make our stand-alone scanner work with hubby's Vista; bought a new Epson 3-in-one "guaranteed" to work with Vista...but it never did, either. IMHO the problem is Vista. Don't know why, but seems the printer companies never made scanning software for the printers that would work with Vista. Neysa ----- Original Message ----- From: Ridge To: gen-newbie@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, January 06, 2012 10:25 AM Subject: [GN] New printer has no scan capabilities I bought an HP Officejet 4500, should have copy, scan and fax capabilities. After installing, and reinstalling, there is still no scan option through the control panel on the printer . I have Vista OS. I originally had an HP PhotoSmart 2610 All-in-One (much better machine!!) but I also could not access scan through the printer control panel. After much googling and reading online, I learned to access the scan function using Paint. This worked fine and I was satisfied to do that . I find accessing Scan through Paint also works with this new HP printer... . But it frustrates me that something that should be accessed through the printer control panel does not work. Has anyone else had a problem with scan function with Vista? 3. Just a thought and you might have already done this -- But, have you gone to the HP site to see if there is a new driver since yours was packaged and sold? I have found that sometimes the newest drivers are not on the CD that comes packaged with the product. Hope you can make it work with at least one of the suggestions given on the list. Here is a site to try and at the left side is also a link to troubleshoot a problem. there might be a suggestion there. 3. Back in the dark ages of Gen-Newbie we would often post Happy Dances. Happy Dances were done when we started making even little chips in that proverbial brick wall. We came here when we just could not make a connection to ask for the help of other active members and even some lurkers who would send messages through our list mom or other members. Sometimes that help would be exact and sometimes it would be teaching. You have to learn to do it on your own eventually. One of my biggest brick walls and the search is not done is/was Titus Delaney. I have had help from several groups on dear old Titus and now he is listed as Titus Laney on my family tree. Titus might even qualify as a black sheep. He used several variations of both names through time and seems to have died between 1860 and 1870 but can not find a grave. He also moved often so that also presented problems. I continue the search for more information but I now have his spouse and children so my gg grandmother was not to an unknown Delaney. Big brick wall stories are encouraging to newbies and newbies might want to see if others can help with their broken links. 3. I think it's quite possible they had the wrong war, and as for right story, wrong family ... I simply don't know. The adoption of family stories seems quite plausible to me. When I first started doing this, I believed the name change story, and ended up being surprised because it clearly wasn't true, at least time-wise. In fact, it was someone on Gen-Newbie who questioned it when I repeated it. Connie Maybe they just had the "wrong war?" Although this actually did happen in my family (bef WWI), we have to remember that the Germans were none too popular in parts of this country during the Revolutionary War. <G> But, of course, there's also the "right story, wrong family" possibility. Were there any other relatives with German sounding names around the turn of the 20th century? I've seen several cases where "cousins" "adopted" family stories as their own, probably never thinking of exactly where the story came from. Pat In Tucson

    3. Philip Schmitt was born in 1760, Dutchess County, New York, the son of Johan Jacob Schmitt who was born in Affalterbach in what is now Germany. The latter immigrated to the Americas in about 1752. Philip Schmitt/Schmidt emigrated to Canada from the colonies before his children were born. One son was called Mathias Smith (1786-1868), and apparently his brother and four sisters also used the name Smmith, and all further descendants were referred to as Smith, rather than Schmitt or Schmidt. But family lore (this is my maternal grandfather's maternal family) is that they changed their name during World War I in order to avoid having a German sounding name. Maybe that was the reason why it was changed originally, I simply don't know, but it certainly was before the first world war by more than a few years. A first cousin had been doing the genealogy of my paternal family for some time. She had my grandfather listed as Rufus Marion. As a matter of fact, the Marion was a "family" name, so I went with it, and he always signed his name Rufus M. Everyone else said it was a fact. Everyone except one person, my Dad. He said he thought sure his Dads name was Rufus Marvin. This year when Ancestry had their military WWII database free, I poured over it trying to find Grandpa's service this time. He never talked about his service at any length, which made it hard to find anything. I finally found him registered under Rufus N. When I searched more carefully for his ship (he was Navy), I found him with the name Rufus Marvin Brock. All of his records except his registration was under the middle name of Marvin. My Dad was right! I've been at this for over 20 years and I still found a mistake about someone I knew very well. I wish my Dad was here so I could share it.
