I seem to be in strange territory I have a brand new iMac, Im just coming to terms with the Mouse, which has a mind of its own. Now Im slowly venturing into the programs Does the iMac come with software like a email/internet program? Does it have a basic word processing program? From what I can see it doesn't. If it does where do I find it on the computer? Do I have to now learn a new language to use it, to tell you the truth, it scares me as nothing is familiar Help Will Be APPRECIATED Annette Aksenov Please help me work out what I need to get in order of practicality & need > > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > GEN-NEWBIE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

    3. Annette, You have built in apps for the most common things you will want to do. Some of the apps included with your new Imac are Mail, Safari, ICal, Address Book, IMovie, IPhoto 'Mail' is your email client. 'Safari' is the Web Browser. 'ICal' is a calendar. 'Address Book' is of course, the address book. 'IPhoto' is a photo gallery 'IMovie' is a movie player. You can also install the usual stuff, like Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice/NeoOffice For genealogy, some available apps are Gramps, Reunion, Family Tree Maker, MacFamilyTree. 3. I can't think of any applications that you would of used or had with windows that come on a Imac, that’s the bad news, the good news is a google search for free Mac software includes a lot of things. While I like the Mac OS I hate the the price they charge for both software and hardware. Memory from apple is a joke $200 for 4gb module. I have and older g5, But I haven't even turned it on in a couple of years,,,I might have some software laying around, but I'm not sure what,,I 'll take a look and see if I kept any of it, and if so you can have it as I don't intend to use the thing anyway. I'll look down the basement where I keep all my relics and let you know. I only used that thing for Music and video, so I don't hold out much hope I'll have anything useable. I'll let you know what I find and whether it will work with Lion. 3. Marilyn, thanks for your help. I am also looking at an Epson... have always had HP and we have a tendency to stick with what we know. My sister-in-law swears by Epson and she does a lot of photo printing and on heavy paper. It would be so much easier if I were near a Best Buy or Staples; I'll have to order and have it shipped. I would really like to 'see' one before buying! I print a lot of genealogy records and bind them using card stock for the covers and that's why it is so important that the printer takes card stock. I don't think any of the cheaper ones will so I need to go ahead and bit the bullet and get what I need! The HP I had was heavy duty and took card stock easily. Will continue looking tomorrow. Must watch the football game between Alabama and LSU. I'm an Arkansan. Wooooo Pig Sooie! You asked about preserving pictures. I scan with the highest resolution I can, and save to disk. I save not just one copy, but always two or more on different disks. And of course store the photos and copies themselves in acid free covers. With the change in storage venue... now I need to transfer from CD to DVD! Thanks again, Marilyn, Wanda ----- Original Message ----- From: "marilyn E B" <marilyneb@gmail.com> To: <gen-newbie@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 09, 2012 4:17 PM Subject: Re: [GN] need help choosing printer > Wanda, > > I will try to answer both of your questions as best I can. 3. Snopes says nope! http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/quickfix.asp Connie Hi Jim, I don't know if this is of any worth to you, but many years ago someone told me to keep from having 'bots' take your address book, make the first entry a number instead of a name, a number like 1000. Bots cannot read numbers. I did that and although I have been on some shaky websites knowing full well it was not a safe website, I have not had my address book compromised...don't know if it has prevented hijacking or not, but it hasn't done any harm either...every time I export my address book to another mail program, the #1000 goes too... 3. Jim, changing all your passwords was the right thing to do, and hopefully, that will fix it. But, there seems to be some misunderstanding about email account highjacking. Email account highjacking is usually done at the mail server account. Not on your computer. The operating system has nothing to do with it. Having said that, it is of course possible for windows users to get a virus that can harvest and use their address book. On the Mac thing. As far as I am aware, their is no known Mac or Linux virus that can access an address book. Also, I understand the Mac OSX Snow Leopard and Lion now have anti-malware protection built in. 3. Wanda, I will try to answer both of your questions as best I can. If I had had a sheet of any card stock or heavy weight paper I would have tried that but I do not have any. I think you could use it at least through the top feed. I think which feed you could use would depend on the weight of the paper. I have printed black and white photos a few times and they usually very good. I have found that their quality depends on several things; age and condition of photo, your skill with scanning the original photo and quality of paper you are using. I had never done a color photo but I just now did my first one. I used a school picture of my grand daughter from last year. I just copied it onto a sheet of regular printer paper and I am sure that affects the quality of the scan. Even with that the colors seem to be fairly true. I can see the highlights in her hair, details on her clothing, her smooth skin and the fact she needs to whiten her teeth. Grandma talking : ) Now I will say I might not have had the settings correct. My friend/neighbor thinks it is of framing quality. Now I have a question for you, how do you preserve pictures you have copied using a printer? 1. Re: [GN] How to print out as sized in Paint and how to enlarge in Word
    2. Connie
    3. You should be able to crop the screen shot before you put it in the Word document. I rarely use Paint, but I took a screen shot of some elephants to find what to do: on the top toolbar in paint you should see crop, resize. rotate. I clicked on resize and then with the mouse at the upper left hand corner of what I want to keep, I pull down to the lower right hand corner and select what I want to keep and then click crop. Then I saved it to the desktop. Then I would open Word (I use WordPerfect, so I'm heading into unknown territory) and insert the newly saved picture/clipping from the desktop into the document. I'm sure you can resize it once it's in your document, by clicking on it (in WP that makes a box) and pulling on the corner handles. Does this make sense? Does it work? Connie Finally, with Word '07 documents, I select the text and change both font and font size with no problem; however, with the screen shot of the obit, Word will not permit me to select the item. Please explain how to do that as well.

    1. [GN] Address Book hijacking...
    2. Lorac
    3. Hi Jim, I don't know if this is of any worth to you, but many years ago someone told me to keep from having 'bots' take your address book, make the first entry a number instead of a name, a number like 1000. 3. Although most attacks are on Windows machines Mac is slowly getting problems. I am using Windows machines with XP, Vista and Win7 OS and it was the XP machine that showed up with problem file that had been languishing in a folder for possibly two years. It was my first hijacking and I hope the last. * Jim Hope* On 09/01/2012 11:16 AM, John Ferman wrote: > Thanks for the heads up, Jim. 3. Check out this link on Amazon and read the reviews. People differ on quality of photo printing. As I said before the price is higher. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Wireless-Inkjet-Printer-3747B002/dp/B002GP7Z6Y/ref=pd_rhf_pe_p_t_1 Marilyn On Mon, Jan 9, 2012 at 11:03 AM, JIM HOPE <jehope1@rogers.com> wrote: > I have not tried to print card stock, but it does print well on premium > photo paper which is heavier than most photo paper. 3. I have not tried to print card stock, but it does print well on premium photo paper which is heavier than most photo paper. I find nothing in the documentation either about card stock and owner reviews give it a 4 out of 5 rating average. I like the 4 ink tanks as well as I tend to use a lot of black and cyan and the other colours seem to run forever. * Jim Hope* On 09/01/2012 10:42 AM, Ridge wrote: > Thanks, Jim.
