I don't have a bit of Irish in me or my genealogy, but I love reading about them and think the list should have at it for the St. Patrick's Day Weekend. 3. Well, I finally got my labels printed. Since they would not print after the Finish and Merge, I moved back to the Home tab and printed from there. It would only print one page at a time, so I had to click through 30 labels to the next page, then print etc. etc. etc. until all 236 labels were printed. Will I be membership chairman next year? Not for anything in this world! Nancy

    3. Sharing from a good friend on Facebook. At work we heard an expert on mobile device security explain how in recent months the implementation of malware against mobile/smart phones has exploded. The trend will only accelerate. I'll try to pass along some recommendations he made... The main targets are Android phones, but all platforms are vulnerable. Malware can hack your passwords, financial data of any kind, photos, or other information that you would not want others to have access to. Most people don't use a pin# or password with more than four characters to unlock their devices, so ANYone who can access your device can conceivably install such malware if you misplace it or don't always have control of it [A PIN with 6 or more characters is going to be much more secure than a 4 digit PIN, and please do NOT use '1234' as your PIN! there are plenty of ways to easily crack short PINs ] There are cybercrime sites that sell equipment that can masquerade as the wifi routers that you access at the local Coffee place and make unauthorized changes on your device or hack its information. People can generate and replace legitimate QR codes on display in public places with fake ones that direct your device to a spoof site when you scan them. There are many links and apps displayed on places such as Facebook that can expose you to malware risks if you click on them--use services that are available which will scan those links to let you know if they are safe. If you travel, especially overseas, it is a good practice to secure your phone when not in your possession by not only removing the battery, but also your SIM card and keeping it with you--criminals can clone SIM cards extremely quickly now. As I posted before, there are potentially fake apps on places such as Google Marketplace that will install malware on your phone. 'Antivirus' apps only scan things like files, they do not protect against malware codes. A little paranoia can be useful here--the important thing is to think about what you are going to click on or install in your mobile device--you MUST consider your smartphone to be a true connected computer (that happens to make phone calls), and protect yourself and your information accordingly. Pat In Tucson Using Windows 7, I want to send a link by email to a page . Under “Page” there is an option to send page by windows live, which I do not want to do.. 3. While I’m sure a database program like Excel would be more efficient if you knew how to use it (I don’t), I have made many a label or sheet of labels using WordPerfect and I’m sure Word probably has the same function. Don’t know about Open Office or Google Docs or any of the others. Connie I've been watching your posts and I'd like ask a question. I need to print about 100 labels for my wedding invitations and from reading this post it looks like I'll need to do it in excel? Anyone willing to help me on this project would be greatly appreciated. I know very little about Excel. If you'd prefer to answer me personally that would be fine too. Thank you in advance Deborah Harris

    3. Pat I am saving the changes made in Excel. I had the Plus 4 zip codes in a different field. I was trying to move them into the zip code field so I can eliminate one column. I was able to do that individually. When looking at the fields (columns) to do a mail merge, I can only access 12 columns (thus the elimination of at least one column) I am trying to print labels in Word 2007 with mail merge. In the last two weeks I have changed the printer from an HP 4200 to an HP 8600. While trying to print the labels I am not able to access all the fields in my database. The labels should be printed for those members who do not receive their newsletter electronically. Since I am unable to access the field that indicates that information, I copied the database then deleted those who do get their newsletter electronically. So now I have a database for the newsletter labels. So far so good. I went through the whole process of getting the labels formatted and ready for printing, then it told me (after 20 minutes) it was unable to merge the information. I canceled the print job but it said something about 75 pages. I print 230+ labels on 30 per page. It should not be 75 pages, only 8 pages. Things in the Excel program have changed, but I don't think a change of printers should make that difference. I haven't thrown out my old HP4200, I may connect that back up to print these labels. If I do that, at least I will know if it is the program or the printer. 3. Nancy I have a similar file, and that's what I was using when I checked this. Using Word 2007 (I haven't worked much with this in 2013 yet.) I think you approached this a different way than I did, but you might want to try this and see if it works for you. In Excel: My column headers are: E or US Last name First Name Mailing Address City State Zip The file also includes extraneous columns (email address, phone numbers, last paid dues date, whether family or single membership) that I don't use for this, so I'll note how to deal with that first. First, if you don't have one, add a column that indicates "electronic" or "US Mail." Sort the database so the US Mail are on top. Select the columns you will use for the mail merge. Copy them down to the end of the US Mail group, and paste into Sheet 2. You might want to label the sheet "US MAIL" In Word, 2007, using Mailings Labels Avery 5260 New Document Mailings Select Recipients Use Existing List (find current .xls list in Explorer) Select the table where the addresses are, (US MAIL) check mark on "first row of data contains column headers" Go to "Insert Merge Field"(Or, do this by using "Address Block" -- either works) Individually put in the fields as you want them (I put in "First Name" space "Last Name", etc.) Personally, I like to fiddle with the position of the merge codes on the label, so I add a line above and a bit of space to the left. Makes it easier if printers aren't quite in line. Click on "Preview Results" Take a look at the label. Make sure it looks as you intended, and there are not runon parts. Click on "Update Labels" This will populate all the cells in the table with the merge codes. Click on "Finish and Merge." That should populate the table with all the names and addresses Your page should be ok. For the electronic versions, I just copy the email addresses, put them in a word pad, and plug in the semi-colons. Easier that way, as then I don't have to mess with the address book. Of course, I have to redo that part for each issue, since new members are added, addresses change, and people drop off. But at least that way I only have to make one change, and then copy for the other uses. Let me know if this helps. It worked ok for a few days then it just slowed down, went blank on me wouldn't startup, you name it I had it Before loading AVG, I followed the instruction to the letter with deleting Norton's.When I deleted Norton's I had 29.5GB of memory. After 4 days of using AVG I now have 13.5GB of memory. Its so slow and sluggish. Last night, the computer just froze on me, had a hard time starting up again. This morning, I deleted all of AVG products, even went to regedit and got rid of all AVG there, also found some Nortons & Symantec files I deleted. Now, when I should have a clean computer, with only Microsoft Security Essentials protecting me. I still have no memory What can I do now? What security program can I use? Where has all my memory gone? Looking forward to some help PLEASE Annette Aksenov

I use CCleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner and Malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/ Both are free and the GN list has recommended them -- you just need to be sure to download the free versions. You might have something like that that has infected your machine. Otherwise, I do not know how to help with this.
