Since we are on the topic of AVG -- did anyone do the update yesterday? I did and am not sure if it had anything to do with what is happening now. I have Win7, Firefox as my Browser and --- I use Yahoo/ATT as my homepage, as that is what I got started with when I got ATT (SBCGlobal) as my ISP. I also have the Yahoo toolbar, which has a lot of my bookmarks. I have had an icon on this toolbar to go directly to FaceBook without having to sign in each time. Since I updated AVG, that icon brings up the sign in page for Facebook. Hate having to sign in each time and wonder if it is AVG, or an update to Yahoo or even an update to Facebook that I have not heard about. I cannot find the Yahoo toolbar in 'my programs' to uninstall. Also, when I went to do a restore to see if the update to AVG was the problem, my restore points had been turned off. I did not do this, so would AVG have done this? I have never had a problem with AVG in the years I have used it, but am beginning to think it would be better to go to something else now. Thanks for any advice. Have a good one. Joy
I have had an interesting time for the past couple of days attempting to remove all the traces of AVG. I decided to remove it and install MSE to see if AVG might be contributing to my mouse hangups. What an eye opener. Believe me you simply cannot uninstall all of AVG no matter what you do - even if you remove it manually it will pop right back up somewhere in Users. I Googled and found that several people have had the same experience. I know it's supposed to be a good AntiVirus but I will never put it back on my computer. Surprises me when I see what some software is attempting to put on my computer. I installed Advanced System Care this morning and wow I wasn't careful enough, as I ended up with lots of stuff that I had to take off. At least Advanced Care is worth it - I hope! Sorry for ranting. I was just so overwhelmed with all the extras and left overs. I guess too many new things to learn today. Yvonne
Hi Linda, Yes, they were good mail lists. I used the Prodigy lists most of the time but there were other smaller lists also that I don't remember the name. All good people on them helping each other even if we didn't share the same ancestors. Constant emails day and night. We shared experiences as well as records or posted records from books and resources that we owned. I am sorry too to see them disappear. Thanks for writing, nice to hear from someone from those days. It is the ONLY a-v program I use. I use the Windows Firewall. I just sent through a post for Jack. See if it brings up questions here. I will try to answer them. Jack, set a restore and then download and install IE 10 and see if you do better. It works fine with my Win 7. But I admit that I am experimenting and almost exclusively using Chrome because I want to see how well I sync between Windows laptops and a Chromebook. MSE is an anti-vir*us program, not a fixer. If you are after a fixer, I have enjoyed using the free version of Advanced System Care enough that I finally broke down and bought the pro version when it was offered at a discount. It does more than CCleaner though I have always fallen back on CCleaner for 90% of my computer maintenance. Here is what I use if it helps. The problem with doing this is different manufacturers and configurations don't always work well with the same setups. Anti-virus -- Microsoft Security Essentials Windows with ALL updates Chrome is default browser, I also use Firefox and Internet Explorer 10 depending on what I might encounter at a website I use WinPatrol at all times since it alerts me to any odd things occurring in my start up. I contributed a small amount to them and have a lifetime license for I think a minimum of three computers I use the Windows Firewall I use SpywareBlaster and love it, I use the freebie, and it sits quietly in the background. Because I use the free version I must personally seek updates, it does not update itself. I have MalwareByes here but don't often remember it since I installed Advanced System Care (ASC) since it does protect against malware. I did use Roboform for password management, but dislike that they are branching out more and more and charging yearly fees. I went to Dashlane a few months ago and it is on my Chromebook and on my laptops and tablets and I really like it. I should break down and make a contribution. I use a third party mail program, TheBat! by RitLabs. I don't encourage it because there is a bit of a learning curve and it is not free. But Iwouldn't be without it though there have been major changes in it in the last version. I have five eBook readers on my laptop. I read in the Cloud on my Chromebook, mainly on the eReaders, and occasionally on my laptop. I use IrfanView free for graphics. I use Media Center primarily to bring in TV and I use a small TV tuner which has a small TV antenna and plugs into a USB port. I use WordWebPro (has a free version, I donated for the pro version) because I like it better than going out to the web to check a definition. It's truly a fine dictionary and if it doesn't cover the word, it takes you to the web if you opt for that. I use FastStoneCapture (paid, but there's a free version, I donated) to capture screen shots in all kinds of configurations when I want pages from the internet, I use Carbonite for out of house backup to their servers. I also have some free cloud space available from Amazon and Google because of my accounts with them. Both also sell space on their servers. I use Real Player (paid) by preference because I like the way it downloads videos for me. I also use iTunes because I have a number of Apple handheld devices. I think I have hit the top of the programs, but I do have a lot of programs and some I use so seldomly I forget what they do. Ask if you think I use something you are interested in. I do burn CDs and DVDs and do stream movies via Amazon and Netflix occasionally, I don't edit music or videos, I accept them as they are and probably will never make any effort to do that. I hope this isn't a ton more than you wanted to hear and read. I just read the post to Jack, and appreciate all your comments. I've always used AVG, no problem, but after changing computers, use Avast. Seems to work well. Also use CCleaner and MalawareBytes. Paid small fee for RegCurePro when I was having problems with old computer, and still have license. I've never had major problems although I do a lot of tweaking this and that to bring the computer to exactly what I want. The only thing I am not happy with is Windows Live Mail and how it sends pictures with emails but I'm getting used to it. I read every post that comes through this discussion list. Days pass without anything of interest to me, then all at once you are all discussing something that benefits me. Thank you for administering the list and a big thank you to all the people who respond to the questions. I have learned a lot, just lurking and reading the posts. Just today I took off AVG and put ME back on. I had taken ME off because of some reviews, but I really think my computer is running better with it on. I am still experiencing some hangups with mouse and keyboard but nothing like I was. So, maybe if I keep tweaking it will finally start performing. I need to give George credit. What a guy he is! He sent me a page of suggestions which ended up being quite the learning experience. Also the upgrading drivers tool (sorry can't remember the name) made a huge difference as well. I have Malwarebytes and Spybot on my computer. But think I will take off Spybot if I don't need it. I'm like the rest of you, I learn so much from the gen-newbie list. I am forever grateful for all of you. Yvonne On 3/22/2013 7:31 PM, ETM wrote: > It is the ONLY a-v program I use. I use the > Windows Firewall. I just sent through a post for > Jack. I removed Java and don't miss it. I am aware many people say all one needs to do is disable it. If I am not using something I see no value in letting it take up space. Instructions are below for removal for Vista. Make sure you have all versions of it removed from your computer (uninstalled, not deleted). Elaine Older versions of Java may appear in the program list as J2SE, Java 2, Java SE or Java Runtime Environment. Windows 7 and Vista - Uninstall Programs Click Start Select Control Panel Select Programs Click Programs and Features Select the program you want to uninstall by clicking on it, and then click the Uninstall button. Elaine, I keep getting a message to update my JAVA and to first uninstall the old version (which I didn't even know I had). I tried uninstalling it, but it was still there. I use a 64 bit laptop with Vista and followed the instructions for the 64 bit, but then it said it is unavailable for that version. I remember someone saying some time ago not to remove JAVA (just disable it) but to keep JavaScript which I don't think I have. I'm totally confused. Also, I've been very happy with my Vista and hope that something more user friendly than Windows 7 or 8 will come out for my 70 year old mind. Thanks for any help. Sallyg
Drafts of what? If your email, then they should be in your email program somewhere. I don't think there would be any connection with SlimDriver and drafts of anything. Elaine Pursue only those things which capture your heart. I also downloaded Slim driver and in the end found all my Drafts gone. I’m sure I must have made a mistake somewhere along the line, but I would love to have my drafts restored. Am I asking the impossible ?
