The distinction between Ancient and Medieval, while solely one of degree rather than kind, carries great weight. You can do all kinds of things at an ancient site that typically would not be allowed at a medieval one. Indeed, most of the research subjects are no longer in situ, having been looted a century ago, and this changes things. Further, Europeans and Euro-Americans are often much more willing to dig up someone else's ancestors than their own. Plus with Tut, there was a nationalistic and personal impetus behind many of the decisions made by the Egyptian head of antiquities that made it a unique case. taf
