Part of “The Mountain Empire”, and located east of Coeburn, the community of Banner was first recognized by the formation of a post office Feb. 1, 1890. Southwestern Virginia was first explored around 1750, by Thomas Walker and Christopher Gist. Daniel Boone’s party, on their way to Kentucky in 1775 to build the Wilderness Road, camped in nearby Castle’s Woods. After Indian hostilities ended about 1795, vast numbers of pioneers flooded into the Lands of the Western Waters. The second land patent on Little Tom’s Creek was issued in 1836, to John Banner. Wise County was formed In 1856 from land taken from Lee, Scott, and Russell Counties.
