    3. More at http://expertgenealogy.com/?x=Buckingham Family and local history research service for the county of Buckinghamshire England and beyond I offer a family and local history research service for the county of Buckinghamshire and beyond. If you have ancestry in Buckinghamshire I can help you discover your family heritage in this historic county. Heritage can encompass all evidence left behind from the past: not just the physical evidence of the past, landscape, monuments and houses, but documentary and oral evidence that reveals people’s memories, their experiences and how they fitted in to the social context of their culture and community. History, both family and local, is confined by what has been left behind but nevertheless much can still be discovered, if the evidence is available, about the most ordinary of lives. The Internet is a wonderful medium for family history research but it is no substitute for examining original documents. Errors in transcribed indexes on Internet sites can often throw you off trail in your family history research. If your search has gone cold somewhere in Buckinghamshire you may not be able to travel to the county to investigate further. This is where a local research service can be of great help. No research task is too small. I have been interested in history since childhood: inspired by the most amazing history teacher at senior school. I first became interested in family history when my father in law asked me to trace his mother’s family. Due to tragic circumstances he had lost touch with his mother as an infant. Encouraged by my success at finding his extended maternal family I began researching my own family history, and later, for clients who have ancestry in my home county of Buckinghamshire. I have twelve years experience in genealogical research and have also completed several house histories. My knowledge of Buckinghamshire is not just confined to the records available in the Centre for Bucks Studies and the several local studies departments in the county. The word of mouth knowledge and contacts, that have accumulated in the many years I have lived in the Great Missenden and Chilterns area have, on occasions, been invaluable additions to my research.

Its boundaries at that time included present-day Rockland County, which split from Orange County in 1798. Due to its small population, the original Orange County was not fully independent and shared government functions with other counties. The first public buildings were erected in Orangetown in 1703, and the first court was established in 1801. Noted for their lightning strikes on Union targets and their ability to consistently elude pursuit, the Rangers disrupted Federal communications and supply lines. The 43rd Battalion was formed on June 10, 1863, at Rector's Cross Roads, near Rectortown, Virginia, when John S. Mosby formed Company A of the battalion. Mosby was acting under the authority of General Robert E. Lee, who had granted him permission to raise a company in January 1863 under the Partisan Ranger Act of 1862, in which the Confederate Congress authorized the formation of such units. By the summer of 1864, Mosby's battalion had grown to six cavalry companies and one artillery company, comprising about 400 men. After February 1864, the Confederate Congress revoked the authority of all partisan units, except for two, one of which was the 43rd Battalion. The battalion never formally surrendered, but was disbanded on April 21, 1865, after General Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House, but not before attempting to negotiate surrender with Major General Winfield S. Hancock in Winchester, Virginia. “This book is really the result of the habit of keeping a diary. During my imprisonment in the spring of 1863, in the Old Capitol prison in Washington, I kept a diary as a means of whiling away the tedious hours of prison life. After being exchanged, I joined Mosby in April, 1863, two months before the organization of Company A, his first company, and was with him until the surrender. The habit acquired while in prison still clung to me when I entered upon the active life of a ranger. It then became a pleasure to jot down the events that came under my observation or that I heard related by my comrades or others. I soon began to feel that my work was not completed until I had noted down briefly what had happened during the day. In this way my diary was kept sometimes written by the wayside, sometimes by the camp-fire, sometimes in the quiet of the fireside.” CONTENTS - Memoirs Introduction vii I Early Life . .1 II The War Begins . . .11 III A Private In The Cavalry .... 22 IV Johnston's Retreat From Harper's Ferry . 33 V Recollections or Battle Of Manassas . 47 VI The Strategy Of The Battle Of Manassas . 55 VII About Fairfax Court House ... 86 VIII Campaigning With Stuart .... 99 IX The Campaign Against Pope . . . .122 X First Exploits As A Partisan . . . 146 XI The Raid On Fairfax 168 XII Stuart And The Gettysburg Campaign . 201 XIII The Year After Gettysburg . . . 258 XIV The Campaign Against Sheridan . . .283 XV The Greenback Raid 312 XVI Last Days In The Valley .... 327 XVTI Final Scenes 353 XVIII In Retrospect 365 XIX My Recollections Of General Lee . . 374 XX My Recollections Of General Grant . 383 Index 401

(Knowledge of the history of the Episcopal Church of Virginia, it should be pointed out, is essential to the genealogist since, prior to civil registration, the Church was the only body authorized by statute to collect and preserve vital statistics. The early parish records, therefore, are indispensable for research in Virginia genealogy.) Compiled from parish records and vestry records, from moldy official documents, family records, and tombstone inscriptions, and from records in Lambeth Palace, London, Meade's narrative focuses on the history of the early Virginia parishes and provides details concerning the origins of the parishes, the drawing of parish lines, and the lives of the ministers and selected church members. Each chapter of the work also contains family histories and extensive lists of vestrymen, communicants, justices, and prominent figures. An appendix of 100 pages contains several interesting historical documents as well as lists of ministers and vestrymen of St. Stephen's and Wicomico Parishes, Northumberland County, and additional family histories. "This book remains an indispensable storehouse of information about the ecclesiastical history of Virginia during the Colonial period."-- Dictionary of American Biography "Bishop Meade's two volumes are fundamental to the study of the parishes of the Episcopal Church in Virginia and their clergy and are an important source of information about many of the leading families of the state...."--The Virginia Genealogist. Each chapter covers a geographic area (county or cities), and includes details on its parishes, churches, ministers and prominent familes Most of the articles have sprinkled through them extensive extracts and abstracts from colonial documents, including, in addition to the vestry books, such sources as court records, private letters and monumental inscriptions. Many of these records had not previously been published, and, although many have since been placed in print in more modern and comprehensive editions, there are undoubtedly records here, especially among the letters and inscriptions, which have not been published elsewhere and which have subsequently been lost or destroyed. Most of the genealogical material is presented in long footnotes. Although this material is not documented according to modern standards, the author would often have obtained the information from family members born in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth centuries, who were in a position to provide reliable data on the more recent generations. These genealogies will provide solid clues for further research. The parishes focused on are in Volume 1 are: Williamsburg, James City, Hanover, Alexandria, Henrico, Hampton, Elizabeth City, Charles City, Middlesex, Prince George, Essex, New Kent, Caroline County, Lynnhaven, Antrim, Camden, Raleigh, Westmoreland, King George, Fairfax County, Shenandoah, St. Anne's in Albemarle, St. George's in Spottsylvania, St. Mark's in Culpeper, and St. Thomas in Orange County. The Berkley, Blair, Burwell, Carter, Fontaine, Grymes, Harrison, Jones, Lee, Meade, Moore, Nelson, Page, Randolph, Robinson, Smith, Spottswood, Taylor, and Yeardley families receive detailed coverage; in addition over 3,000 other surnames are included. The parishes focused on are in Volume 2 are: Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Campbell, Bedford, Amelia, Nottoway, Prince Edward, Cumberland, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Louisa, Albemarle, Amherst, Nelson, Botetourt, Rockbridge, , Spottsylvania, Culpepper, Orange, Northumberland, Lancaster, Westmoreland, Richmond, King George, Stafford, Prince William, Fauquier, Fairfax, , Shenandoah, Augusta, Rockingham,. If you want to learn about the American Revolutionary War then any book will suffice. If you want to KNOW about same, one goes to Lossing.” In 1848 Benson J. Lossing set out on an 8,000 mile journey that took him to all of the thirteen original colonies and Canada. His mission was to see and record the stories of the American Revolution before they were lost to time and the rapid growth of the still young United States. Two years later, he published his Pictorial Field-Book of the Revolution. The two volume set contained over a 1,500 pages with illustrations from the author. It chronicles virtually every fight and skirmish of the war, the stories often gleaned from eyewitnesses or their children. If an American and a Briton stood on opposite banks of a stream and threw rocks at each other, chances are it's recounted in Lossing's fine work. Additionally, Lossing's book serves as a time capsule travelogue of what America was like in the years just prior to the Civil War. In this edition, editor Jack E. Fryar, Jr. has reproduced the chapters of Lossing's work that pertain specifically to North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Lavishly illustrated by Lossing's wonderful drawings and with meticulous end notes that read like a book in themselves, this seminal work is a super addition to any history collection of the Revolutionary War Other Lossing classics also offered in my EBay store: The Pictorial Field-Book of the War of 1812 The Pictorial Field-Book of the Civil War (All three Field-Books also available for purchase on a single CD, for greatest savings.)

They came down the Ohio from Redstone, Pennsylvania, and, believing that a permanent peace had been effected between the Indians and whites at this point, selected their lands and began the work of tilling the soil. While on an exploring tour up the valley, lured hither by the glowing accounts they had heard of the wonderful beauty and fertility of the country, the four men were attacked by their campfire at night, and two of the party were killed, the others escaping. They lost no time in reaching the unprotected women and children at the mouth of the Scioto, where they imparted the sad intelligence of the death of their two comrades. Embarking upon their boat with their few belongings, they were soon en route for more secure quarters at Limestone, Kentucky. It was after this that the settlements were made at Marietta, Gallipolis, North Bend, Columbia and Cincinnati, of all of which sufficient mention is made in the State history. The settlement of the Scioto valley was delayed by order of Congress.
