"Within this territory were the seats of the Fairfaxes, Washingtons, Masons, McCartys, Fitzhughs, Brents, Alexanders, Lewises, Mercers, Daniels, Carters, Dades, Stuarts, Corbins, Tayloes, Steptoes, Newtons, Browns, Lees, Thorntons, Balls, Smiths, and other leading families too many to mention, who dispensed an elegant hospitality at Northumberland House, Nomini, Stratford, Chantilly, Mount Airy, Sabine Hall, Bedford, Albion, Cedar Grove, Boscobel, Richland, Marleborough, Woodstock, Gunston, Belvoir, Woodlawn, Mount Vernon, etc. Beginning at Lancaster, county was taken from county, Parish from Parish, as the population of each passed the frontiers, until in 1730 Prince William was taken from Stafford and King George Counties, above Chappawansick Creek and Deep Run, and along the Potomac, to the "Great Mountains." This became also Hamilton Parish; which Parish, by an Act of the General Assembly passed at the Session of May, 1732, to take effect the first of the following November, was divided into two Parishes "By the river Ockoquan, and the Bull Run, (a branch thereof,) and a course from thence to the Indian Thoroughfare of the Blue Ridge of Mountains," (Ashby's Gap.) All that part of Prince William lying below the said bounds was to retain the name of Hamilton, "And all that other part of the said county, which lies above those bounds, shall hereafter be called and known by the name of Truro." The Parish was named after the Parish in Cornwall, in England, which is now the Diocese of Truro." See Complete Index At: http://www.dmkheritage.com/store/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=60

Massive British settlement began in the early 1730s. From 1735 to 1750, the trustees of Georgia, unique among Britain's American colonies, prohibited African slavery as a matter of public policy. In 1776 the new state's exposed seaboard position made it a tempting target for the British Navy. Savannah was captured by British and Loyalist forces in 1778, along with some of its hinterland. Enslaved Africans and African Americans chose their independence by escaping to British lines, where they were promised freedom. More than one-third of Georgia's slaves, nearly 5,000 people, escaped during the Revolution. The patriots moved to Augusta. At the Siege of Savannah in 1779, American and French troops (the latter including a company of free blacks from Haiti) fought unsuccessfully to retake the city. During the final years of the American Revolution, Georgia had a functioning Loyalist colonial government along the coast. Together with New York City, it was the last Loyalist bastion

Photography In Virginia By Jeffrey Ruggles, 2008 Hardcover, NEW 240 Pages, profusely illustrated, indexed Black cloth cover, with dust jacket Normal minor shelf wear, no marks or tears $36.75 + $3.49 shipping and handling (List price $45) http://cgi.ebay.com/Photography-Virginia-NEW-Hardcover-/130387684097?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0 Photography in Virginia covers images made within the state's borders from the 1840s to the 1960s. The photographers include residents, visitors, professionals, and amateurs, and special attention is paid to African Americans, women, and Confederates. Most of the images have not been published before. Although its subject is photography, the book also offers a fresh look at Virginia history. By 1841, an itinerant daguerreotypist was advertising in Virginia. Two Virginians exhibited at London's Crystal Palace in 1851. During the Civil War, there was a great deal more Union photography of the state than Confederate, and the approaches differed. After the war, photographers opened in each community, and the field grew as a cottage industry. About 1890, modern photography was born when a critical mass of technical advances came together. The medium became popular, accessible by the early 1900s to skilled amateurs and eventually by the 1960s to virtually everyone. The long century of what is now called analog photography lasted from 1890 to about 2005. Today, with the emergence of digital media starting at the end of the twentieth century, it is, for better or worse, a new era. Jeffrey Ruggles is curator of prints and photographs at the Virginia Historical Society. 240 pages, hardcover, ISBN 978-0-945015-30-7, Virginia Historical Society, 2008. List price $45

The shire's name comes from the Native American word Accawmack, meaning "on the other side". In 1642 the name was changed to Northampton by the British, to eliminate "heathen" names in the New World. Northampton was split into two counties in 1663. The northern section assumed the original Accomac name, the southern, Northampton. In 1670, the Virginia Colony's Royal Governor William Berkeley abolished Accomac County, but the Virginia General Assembly re-created it in 1671. Unlike most of Virginia, during the Civil War, the county was not under Confederate control, but held by the forces of the United States government. In 1940, the General Assembly officially added a "k" to the end of the county's name to arrive at its current spelling. Published 1901 By Edgar Woods 411 pages, indexed Bonus #1 – Economic and Social Survey of Albemarle County, 1922 121 pages, searchable Bonus #2 – Virginia Counties & Cities Timeline (Details below) ************************************************************** Digital CD Requires Adobe Reader 5.0 or higher to View *************************************************************** $11.99 + $1.99 shipping and handling http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=200324940062 Edgar Wood's HISTORY OF ALBEMARLE COUNTY IN VIRGINIA is an excellent guide for family researchers whose ancestors lived in Albemarle County. He covers the geography and history of the county, and includes account of various Albemarle families. The appendix has a wealth of information for the genealogist. Highly recommended book! County History In 1744, the Virginia General Assembly created Albemarle County by taking the northern portion of Goochland County. The county was named in honor of Willem Anne van Keppel, 2nd Earl of Albemarle and titular Governor of Virginia at the time. The large county was divided in 1761, forming Buckingham and Amherst counties, at which time the county seat was moved from the formerly-central Scottsville to a piece of newly-central land, christened Charlottesville. President Thomas Jefferson was born in the county at Shadwell, though it was then part of Goochland County. His home of Monticello is located in Albemarle county, however. Present Day Albemarle County, Virginia today encompasses the communities of Batesville, Boyd Tavern, Campbell, Charlottesville, Cismont, Cobham, Covesville, Crozet, Earlysville, Esmont, Free Union, Greenwood, Howardsville, Ivy, Keene, Keswick, Mission Home, North Garden, Scottsville (part), Shadwell, White Hall, and Yancey Mills Adjacent counties Greene County, Virginia (north) Orange County, Virginia (northeast) Louisa County, Virginia (east) Fluvanna County, Virginia (southeast) Buckingham County, Virginia (south) Nelson County, Virginia (southwest) Augusta County, Virginia (west) Rockingham County, Virginia (northwest) In addition, the city of Charlottesville is enclaved within Albemarle County. Under Virginia law in effect since 1871, all municipalities in the state incorporated as cities are legally and politically independent of any county. Bonus – Virginia Counties & Cities Timeline Summarized from “Virginia Counties – Those Resulting from Virginia Legislation” Published 1916 This is a 21 page chart summarizing, in date order, the formation of all 180 Virginia counties now located in the present day states of Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky. Also includes information on the 90 independent cities of Virginia. Begins in 1634 with the eight original shires, continues through 1776 with the first county in present day Kentucky, and 1779 with the first county in present day West Virginia. Dickenson was the last new Virginia county, formed 1880. In 1920 Alexandria County was renamed Arlington County.
