Cavaliers & Pioneers: Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents & Grants, 1623-66 (Genealogy) by: Nell Marion Nugent ISBN: 9780806302645 (0-8063-0264-X)0 Book Title: Cavaliers & Pioneers: Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents & Grants, Volume 1 - 1623-1666 Author: Nell Marion Nugent Binding: Hard Cover Copyright: 2004 Pages: 767 Size: 5.75 x 8.75 x 1.75 in. ************************************* NEW PRINTED BOOK ************************************* $49/94 + $4.95 shipping and handling http://cgi.ebay.com/Cavaliers-and-Pioneers-1623-166-Virginia-Genealogy-/200453386682?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2eabf3f1ba This is one of the most outstanding records of early emigrants to Virginia. It records, under the name of the patentee or grantee, the earliest Virginia land grants and patents from 1623 to 1666, giving the number of acres, locations and dates of settlement, and names of family members, and it further provides references to marriages, wills, and other legal instruments. It also has the names of some thousands who were transported or brought over by the early settlers as "headrights." The index contains the names of about 20,000 persons. For anyone whose research takes them into seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century Virginia, Nell Marion Nugent's three-volume Cavaliers and Pioneers is an indispensable source. These abstracts of the records of the colonial land office cover the years from 1623 to 1666 (Volume 1), from 1666 to 1695 (Volume 2), and from 1695 to 1732 (Volume 3). Dennis Ray Hudgins, in collaboration with The Virginia Genealogical Society, has edited additional volumes under the same title which brings the series to 1774 and the end of the forty-two volume colonial patent book series. The abstract of each patent gives, in order, the name of the patentee, the number of acres in the patent, the county in which the land was situated at the time the patent was issued, the date of the patent, the book and page of recordation, a description of the location of the land, and, if applicable, the names of the persons on the basis of whose transportation the patent was due. Any additional information contained within the patent is also abstracted. The index includes all proper personal names as well as geographical designations. Patents issued for land in the Northern Neck, or Fairfax, Proprietary are not included in this series of records.

The work is purely biographical in its province, and in the collation of material for the same there has been a constant aim to use a wise discrimination in regard to the selection of subjects, and yet to exclude none worthy of representation within its pages. Those who have been prominent factors in the public, social and industrial makeup of the counties in the past have been given due recognition as far as it has been possible to secure the requisite data. Names worthy of perpetuation here have in several instances been omitted, either on account of the apathetic interest of those concerned or the inability to secure the information demanded. Yet, in both the contemporary narrative and the memoirs of those who have passed on to "that undiscovered country from whose bourne no traveler returns," it is believed that there has been such utilization of material as to more than fulfill all stipulations and promises made at the inception of the undertaking. In the compilation recourse has been had to divers authorities, including various histories and historical collections, and implying an almost endless array of papers and documents, public, private, social and ecclesiastical. That so much matter could be gathered from so many original sources and then sifted and assimilated for the production of a single work without incurring a modicum of errors and inaccuracies, would be too much to expect of any corps of writers, no matter how able they might be as statisticians or skilled as compilers of such works. It is, nevertheless, believed that no inaccuracies of a serious nature can be found to impair the historical value of the volumes, and it is further believed that the results will supply the demand which called forth the efforts of the publishers and the editorial corps." This book includes approximately 650 biographies. Book #2 - covers all townships, various portraits, community views, history and biographical sketches. Militia service in Virginia was compulsory for all free males. The main purpose of the Crown's militia was to repel invasions and insurrections and to enforce the laws of the colony. The Virginia militia system, as a compulsory service composed of the body of the people trained to arms as envisioned by George Mason, remained intact until the end of the American Civil War. Reconstruction governments forced upon Virginia an all-volunteer militia system in opposition to Virginia's Bill of Rights. The militia became statutorily composed of the organized and the unorganized militia. During the session which began in October 1777, the Virginia General Assembly passed several laws designed to increase military enlistment. These laws authorized the payment of pensions to maimed and disabled soldiers and to the widows of men killed in action. The provisions varied according to the specific terms of each act. This book includes a listing of Virginia militia units and the Revolutionary War actions in which they were engaged, abstracts of the pension applications of several hundred militia pensioners, lists of militia officers appointed by the various counties and a list of 1835 pensioners with militia service. 3. More at http://expertgenealogy.com/?x=ontarioorigins Ontario and Quebec Canadian Family History Research I am a graduate of the National Institute of Genealogical Studies and have Professional Learning Certificates in Genealogical Studies for both Canadian and American Records. Specializing in Ontario and Quebec research, I have easy access to the Archives of Ontario, Toronto Reference Library and the Canadiana Department of the North York Public Library. With more than twenty-five years experience, I am an expert in the research of Ontario's birth, marriage and death records, census records (1842-1911), newspapers, church, military, probate, and land records, including land petitions and other documents relating to the Loyalists. Few records relating to Canadian immigration survive prior to 1865; however, after that date, detailed ships' passenger lists are available, and these serve as Canada's records of immigration until 1935. I also have access to Ontario French Catholic parish registers. Research in both English and French speaking Quebec is another area of expertise. A descendant of Quebec Loyalists myself, I have a great deal of experience locating documents relating to the Loyalists of the Eastern Townships of Quebec, including English parish registers where available. I also have access to French Catholic parish registers throughout the province. These registers are the primary source for Quebec births, marriages and deaths, as civil registration did not begin in that province until very recently. Census records, which predate those available in Ontario, are another source of valuable information.

The brigade was the largest Confederate unit to be recruited from Kentucky during the war. Its original commander was Major General John C. Breckinridge, former Vice President of the United States and candidate for President, who was enormously popular with Kentuckians. Units of the Orphan Brigade were involved in many military engagements in the American South during the course of the war, including the Battle of Shiloh. In 1862, Breckinridge was promoted to division command and was succeeded in the brigade by Brigadier General Roger W. Hanson. At the Battle of Stones River, the brigade suffered heavy casualties in an assault on January 2, 1863, including General Hanson. Breckinridge-- who vehemently disputed the order to charge with the army's commander, General Braxton Bragg--rode among the survivors, allegedly crying out repeatedly, "My poor Orphans! My poor Orphans." The actual origin of the moniker "Orphan Brigade" remains in dispute. Although the Brigade historian, Ed Porter Thompson, used the term in his 1868 history of the unit, it was probably not in widespread use during the war, but became popular after the war among the veterans. The Orphan Brigade lost yet another commander at the Battle of Chickamauga, when Benjamin Hardin Helm was mortally wounded on September 20, 1863 and died the following day. The Orphan Brigade served throughout the Atlanta Campaign of 1864, then were converted to mounted infantry and opposed Sherman's March to the Sea. They ended the war fighting in South Carolina in late April 1865, and surrendered at Washington, Georgia, on May 6-7, 1865.

Although its creation was authorized in 1753, Hampshire County was not actually organized until 1757 because the area was not considered safe due to the outbreak of the French and Indian War (1754-1763). According to Samuel Kercheval's A History of the Valley of Virginia, the county was named in honor of its several prize hogs Its county seat is Romney, West Virginia's oldest town (1762). A stronghold of Scotch-Irish settlement, Augusta commands great interest among genealogists because thousands of 18th- and 19th-century families passed through it en route to the West. Originally, Augusta County was a vast territory with an indefinite western boundary. Most of what is now West Virginia as well as all of Kentucky were formed from it, and it also claimed the territory north and west of those areas, t heoretically all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Reductions in its extent began in 1770, when its southern part became Botetourt County. In 1776 part of western Augusta County, an area also known as the District of West Augusta, became Monongalia County, Ohio County, and Yohogania County (abolished in 1786). In 1778 the part of Augusta County west of the Ohio River became Illinois County (abolished in 1784); the northeastern part of what was left became Rockingham County, and the southwestern part was combined with part of Botetourt County to form Rockbridge County. In 1788 the northern part of the still shrinking county was combined with part of Hardy County to become Pendleton County. Augusta County assumed its present dimensions in 1790, when its western part was combined with parts of Botetourt County and Greenbrier County to form Bath County. - Book #1 - J. Lewis Peyton's History of Augusta County, Virginia is a standard work on the county. It is essentially a narrative account of Augusta from its aboriginal beginnings and Spotswood's discovery of the Valley of Virginia through the Civil War. Most of Peyton's account follows county politics, especially Augusta during the French and Indian War and the American Revolution; however, the author also deals with the organization of churches, celebrated court cases (such as trials for witchcraft), formation of cities and towns, conflicts with the Indians, and so on. The author intersperses quotations from court records, legislative sessions, fragmentary marriage records, and other primary sources to embellish his account. Genealogists will value the book, in part, as a companion volume to such Augusta County source record collections as Lyman Chalkley's Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia. Of greater importance to genealogists, however, are the genealogical and biographical sketches of the following pioneering Augusta County families found in the Appendix to the volume: Baldwin, Bell, Campbell, Christian, Crawford, Fleming, Hanger, Hughes, Johnson, Koiner, Lee, Lewis, McCue, McCulloch, McDowell, Madison, Mathews, Peyton, Poe, Porterfield, Preston, Sheffey, Stuart, Tate, Waddell, Wayt, Wetzel, and Zane. - Book #2 - Waddell arranges Augusta County's history according to its political milestones, thus we have chapters on the county's first settlement, first courts, Indian wars, Augusta County in the Revolution, and, of course, a number of chapters on Augusta County in the Civil War. Genealogists will most appreciate his discussion of the migration trail out of Augusta County and, interspersed throughout the work, genealogical and biographical sketches of the following Augusta County families: Adams, Alexander, Anderson, Baxter, Bell, Blackburn, Bowyer, Breckenridge, Brown, Cameron, Campbell, Christian, Craig, Crawford, Cummings, Cunningham, Doak, Fleming, Floyd, Gamble, Graham, Hamilton, Harrison, Hays, Jones, Lyle, McClanahan, McDowell, McKee, McLaughlin, McNutt, Madison, Mathews, Moffett, Moore, Nelson, Poage, Preston, Smith, Stuart, Tate, Trimble, Waddell, Warwick, and Wilson.
