1652-1912 The Descendants of Capt. Thomas Carter Of “Barford,” Lancaster County, Virginia With Genealogical Notes of Many of the Allied Families By Joseph Lyon Miller, Published 1912 388 pages, indexed, searchable ***************************************************** Digital EBook Cd Requires Adobe Reader 7 or higher to View ***************************************************** $11.99 + $1.99 shipping and handling http://cgi.ebay.com/Thomas-Carter-Descendants-Lancaster-Co-Virginia-/130382808135?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e5b6bc447 “This volume is the record of a family that for two hundred and sixty years has played a part in the social, political andmilitary life of the Old Dominion and other States to the southand west. While many have held high places of trust and honor, the majority have not been mien of great wealth and publicposition, yet it is to their credit that they were good citizens.leading honorable lives—acting well their part in the local affairsof their neighborhoods, and always finding a place on the battlefieldfor principle's sake. We should not love our kindred alonefor their genius and glory, but also for their homely virtuesand domestic affections that expanded and flourished unobservedsave by the little world in which they moved. “The first of the family in Virginia was Capt. Thomas Carter, planter and tobacco trader, said to have been the son of a Londonmerchant, though it is pretty well established that ''gentle bloodcoursed through his veins." Among his descendants have been vestrymen, justices, sheriffs, legislators, congressmen, circuit andsupreme court judges and candidates for Governor ; and in militaryaffairs they have ranged from private to brigadier-general. In the hundreds of wills, deeds and other papers of the Carterfamily examined, but one man made his mark; and in the inventoriesof their personal estates for two and a half centuriesthe possession of books is recorded in all. “A noticeable fact is that many of the Carters of Virginia as well as elsewhere, though they cannot give a connected account of theirancestry beyond the Revolution, are by '"tradition" descendantsfamous old "King Carter of Corotoman,'" whose immense wealth has enabled his descendants to hold on to the splendid old homesof his sons, and the frequent appearance in print of accountsof these has done much to spread and maintain this idea. These"traditions" have been particularly hard to shake even in thelight of comprehensive data to the contrary from the originalpublic records.” The first (wooden) Christ Church in Lancaster County was built by John Carter in 1670. His son Robert current built the brick Historic Christ Church structure in 1730 (pictured). Many Carter descendants were members, and are buried in its cemetery.

Of books of Peerage, of Baronetage, and of Landed Gentry we are not without a sufficiency; but of books purporting to treat of the ordinary surnames that greet our eye—of these there are but few. Surnames, we must remember, were the simple result of necessity when population, hitherto isolated and small, became so increased as to necessitate further particularity than the merely personal one could supply. One name, therefore, was all that was needed in early times, and one name, as a general rule, is all that we find. The purely Roman citizen had a threefold name. The first denoted the 'pr&nomen,' and answered to our personal, or baptismal, name. The second was what we may term the clan-name; and the third, the cognomen, corresponded with our present surname. For the sake of further distinction I will place all names formally and under concise headings:— 1. Baptismal or personal names. 2. Local surnames. 3. Official surnames. 4. Occupative surnames. 5. Sobriquet surnames, or Nicknames.

The original "ancient records of Births, Marriages, and Deaths" consisted of six volumes, some of which were in an extremely bad condition. The six original town books were re-bound into three volumes, forming volumes one, two, and three of the vital records of the town. The records contained in the three volumes appear to have been begun about 1693, although a few entries are of previous dates, when John Greenland, who made the earlier entries, became town clerk. They are continued until 1842, when the clerk began to use separate volumes for Births, Marriage Intentions, Marriages, and Deaths, which are collectively known as volume four. The volume of Marriage Intentions was used until January 1869; but the use of the others ceased in 1844, when the standard blanks f urnished by the commonwealth began to be used, forming the volume now known as the fifth of the series. An attempt to copy a portion of the old records was made in 1851; but the transcript is faulty and has not been of assistance in the preparation of this volume. In the records of the town as they are now constituted. Births, Marriages, and Deaths do not appear from the time of the incorporation of the town in 1649 to the beginning of the book now known as volume one, the book in which they were entered, if it ever had an existence, being unknown ; and there is a period of about seven years [i 790-1 797], during which Marriages by the pastors of the First Church were not recorded. These periods are, however, covered by contemporary records ; and additions and corrections are made in the present volume by information gathered from them and other sources, as is here stated in detail

The church was built in 1724 and is one of the oldest active churches in North America. Construction of the church building was delayed by the Yemassee Indian War of 1715. Built of brick, much of which originally was ship’s ballast, and smoothed over with stucco, the church has excellen t exterior proportions and fine interior detail. During the Civil War, when Union forces occupied Beaufort in November 1861, the entire congregation fled. Initially during the occupation, church services were held in St. Helena’s, but eventually Federal troops converted the church to a hospital. The church was stripped of its furnishings, marble tombstones were brought in for use as operating tables, and the balconies weredecked over to make a second floor. A hurricane in 1896 destroyed the east end of the church. When the debris was cleared away, the altar remained intact. The building was subsequently rebuilt in its present form.

The Cabells and Their Kin: A memorial volume of history, biography and genealogy 700+ pages, including color plate of "The Cabell Windows", Everyname index By Alexander Brown Published 1895 ******************************************************************** Digital EBook CD Requires Adobe Reader 3 or higher to View ******************************************************************** $11.99 + $1.99 shipping and handling http://cgi.ebay.com/Cabells-and-Their-Kin-Virginia-Genealogy-/130222564253?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e51dea39d Brown opens the Cabell genealogy with a short, thirty-two page chapter on the Cabells and their kin in England. He then proceeds with detailed accounts of Dr. William Cabell (the immigrant), his descendants through the sixth (and sometimes the seventh) generation, and related families. The work is remarkable, partly because the family was remarkable, but also because the compiler attended as much to the Cabell daughters and their descendants as he did the Cabell sons; because he provided us with unusually rich biographies of the family in the first three or four generations; and because he "traced back to the emigrant ancestors" of the Cabell spouses, giving us the "seize quartiers sufficiently often to convey a fairly approximate idea of the English, Scotch, Huguenot, and other blood flowing in the veins of the kindred." As to the family: most of Cabells and their kin in the first three or four generations were lawyers -- "men of affairs." Says Brown: "They were among the most active founders of this region [tidewater Virginia]. From the time when this section was first represented in the colonial government to the beginning of the Revolution, Cabells were in the House of Burgesses. During the 'time that tried men's souls,' Cabells and their kin were in the conventions guarding the rights of their home land. And from the war between the mother country and the Colonies to the war between the States, the Cabells and their kin were constantly representing this region in the House of Delegates, the State Senate, or the House of Representatives of the United States." Cabells and their kin were prominent as well in the military, mostly as officers, in the War of the Revolution and again on the rebel side in the Civil War. "Kin" of this aristocratic family included the likes of Pocahontas, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and Benjamin Harrison (the emigrant, the Signer, AND, the President), Meriwether Lewis, and George Rogers Clark. The surnames of other closely allied families include ALEXANDER, ANTHONY, BOLLING, BRECKINRIDGE, BROWN, BRUCE, CALLAWAY, CAMPBELL, CARRINGTON, CARTER, DAVIS, HORSLEY, JOHNSON, JONES, LEE, McCULLOCH, MAYO, MEREDITH, NELSON, PRESTON, RANDOLPH, READ, REID, RIVES, ROSE, SCOTT, SMITH, TAYLOR, THOMPSON, VENABLE, WALKER, and WOODSON. E. B Stuart, George Pickett, Matthew Fontaine Maury, and the first Confederate soldier killed during the war, Henry Lawson Wyatt, who was the only Confederate fatality at the battle of Big Bethel. Hollywood has the largest number of Confederate generals (23) interred anywhere in the world. In addition to the slain from battles around Richmond such as Seven Pines, Gaines Mill, Malvern Hill, and Cold Harbor, the Confederate Dead exhumed from Gettysburg in the 1870s, were reinterred here on what became known as Gettysburg Hill. This Hollywood Cemetery Registry of Confederate Dead, printed in 1869, contains about 10,500 names of the 18,000 soldiers that rest here. The remaining names (unless they were unknown at the time of burial) and locations were destroyed in a fire at the cemetery office shortly after the war. Also included is a cemetery map, showing the plot sections referenced for each soldier. Markers to the men whose burial location is unknown, such as General Garnett of Pickett’s Charge fame, exist in certain locations. Examples of entries: Names Co. Regt. State Date Sect. May 30, 1864 E 21 Cavalry Hollywood Cemetery is a large, sprawling cemetery located at 412 South Cherry Street in Richmond, Virginia. Characterized by rolling hills and winding paths overlooking the James River, it is the resting place of two United States Presidents, James Monroe and John Tyler, as well as the only Confederate States President, Jefferson Davis. It is also the resting place of 25 Confederate generals, the most of any cemetery in the country. Included are George Pickett and J.E.B. Stuart. Hollywood Cemetery was opened in 1849, constructed on land known as "Harvie's Woods" that was once owned by William Byrd II. It was designed in the rural garden style, with its name, "Hollywood," coming from the holly trees dotting the hills of the property. In 1869, a 90-foot-high granite pyramid was built as a memorial to the more than 18,000 enlisted men of the Confederate Army who are buried in the cemetery.
The Bristol Registers Of Servants Sent to Foreign Plantations 1654-1686 By Peter Wilson Coldham, 1988 491 pages, indexed New, current reprint, hardcover book with dust jacket ISBN: 9780806312231 $27.75 + $3.49 shipping and handling http://cgi.ebay.com/Bristol-Registers-Servants-Foreign-Plantations-/200463985179?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2eac95aa1b In 1654 the Bristol City Council passed an ordinance requiring that a register of servants destined for the colonies be kept, the purpose being to prevent the practice of dumping innocent youths into servitude. The registers, covering the period 1654 to 1686, are the largest body of indenture records known, and they also are a unique record of English emigration to the American colonies. Of the total of 10,000 servants in these registers, almost all came from the West Country, the West Midlands, or from Wales. Most entries give the name of the servant, his place of origin (until 1661), length of service, destination (usually Virginia, Maryland, or the West Indies), name of master, and, after 1670, the name of the ship. Four indexes have been included, one each for servants, masters, places of origin, and ships.

GedScape (http://www.gedscape.co.uk) is a new software product for browsing, converting and extracting data from GEDCOM files, and generating indexed family tree web sites with charts, reports, pedigrees & photos. - Easily view all the data within a GEDCOM using indexes of individuals, dates & places, and with charts including family charts, pedigrees and descendants charts, reports such as ancestors and descendants reports, and image galleries. Highly customizable e.g. choice of date formats, index styles, display of citations, notes and images and many other options. Browser-style interface. - Explore the low-level structure of a GEDCOM (i.e. at the tag level) in a hyperlinked form. - Generate powerful web sites from GEDCOM files with the same display as GedScape itself. I.e., it is in effect a GEDCOM to HTML converter that previews exactly what a site will look like. Generated web sites can include family charts, pedigrees, descendant charts, image galleries, ancestors and descendants reports, index pages, etc. - Convert GEDCOM to text/CSV files e.g. to extract GEDCOM data for use in spreadsheets such as Excel. - Export new GEDCOM files with character set and text file conversion. Useful for converting a GEDCOM for use with legacy programs or other platforms. Supports all commonly used GEDCOM character sets including all Unicode forms, ANSEL, ANSI, Mac etc. - Selectively exclude chosen data/individuals from conversion/extraction or website generation, e.g. to remove specific individuals (and/or their ancestors/descendants), or to exclude individuals based on their date of birth so as to remove living people, or to remove notes or citations. - Tag individuals and/or their ancestors/descendants so as to highlight them including on created web sites. Can also be used to limit an export (text/HTML/GEDCOM) to just the tagged individuals. Pennsylvania Genealogies - Chiefly Scotch-Irish and German By William Henry Egle 1896 700+ pages, Indexed ***************************************************************************** Digital EBook CD Requires Adobe Reader 5.0 or higher to View ***************************************************************************** $10.99 + $1.99 shipping and handling http://cgi.ebay.com/Pennsylvania-Genealogies-Chiefly-Scotch-Irish-/200283160025?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2ea1ce7dd9 This is one of the earliest and richest collections of Pennsylvania genealogies and one which is still considered reliable. This collection of Pennsylvania genealogies is concerned primarily with families which, for the most part, settled in the extreme regions of colonial Chester County, an area for which source material is notoriously scarce. (In 1682 William Penn established Chester County as one of three original counties in the Pennsylvania Colony.) Fully two-thirds of the families included are of Scotch-Irish ancestry, and most, though not all, are brought down to the late nineteenth century. More than 3,000 names are found in the index. Following is a list of the families treated: Ainsworth, Allen, Alricks, Anderson, Andrews, Awl, Ayres, Barnett, Beatty, Boas, Bomberger, Boyd, Bucher, Cowden, Craig, Crain, Curtin, Denny, Dixon, Egle, Elder, Espy, Ferguson, Fleming, Forster, Fulton, Galbraith, Gregg, Greenawalt, Hamilton, Hays, Hoge, Keller, Kendig, Kunkel, Linn, Lobingier, Lyon, Maclay, McCormick, McNair, Muller, Murray, Neville, Orth, Parker, Roan, Robinson, Rutherford, Simonton, Stewart, Swan, Thomas, Wallace, Weir, Wiestling, Wiggins, Wilson, and Wyeth
