Over 600 pages, very detailed account of the colonial settlement of development of this area. Wyoming, in its more limited signification, is the name given to a valley on the Susquehanna river, about twenty miles in length from northeast to southwest, and from three to four miles in width; in its more enlarged sense, it is used to designate the part of the country within the limits of Pennsylvania, embraced within the 42d degree of north latitude, claimed by Connecticut, and partially settled by a colony sent forth under her auspices. Thus the inhabitants of Salem, Huntington, Providence, Exeter and other townships, though not within the limits of the valley, have always been designated as “Wyoming Settlers”. First immigrants – Uriah Chapman, Esq., Capt. Zebulon Parrish, Capt.. Eliab Varnum, Nathaniel Gates, Zadock Killam, Ephraim Killam, Jacob Kimble, Enos Woodward, Isaac Parrish, John Killam, Hezekiah Bingham, John Ansley, Elijah Winters, John Pettlet Sr., John Pellet Jr., Abel Kimble, Walter Kimble, Joshua Varnum, Doctor Amos Parks, Silas Parks, David Gates, Jonathan Haskell, William Pellet, Charles Forsyth, Roger Clark, Jesper Edwards, Reuben Jones. Isaac Zane and James McPherson first came to the area as captives of the Wyandot and Shawnees, respectively. Tarhe-the Crane, the principal chief of the Wyandot, adopted the nine-year-old Zane after Wyandot warriors captured the boy on a raid. Zane grew up in the Wyandot culture, but a prisoner exchange forced him to go back to his white home in Virginia. Zane served in the Virginia House of Burgesses (state government), but after a couple of years he decided to return to his Indian home. He came back to Logan County and married Tarhe’s daughter, Myeerah. Tarhe gave Zane his village on the Mad River and the Wyandot chief moved to Solomon's Town in the north central part of the county. The Mad River village then became known as Zane's Town. Isaac Zane became an important liaison between the Indians of Logan County and the Americans. The southern, southeastern and central regions of Logan County were settled first by Americans. The villages of West Liberty, Zanesfield and Bellefontaine were officially laid out around 1820. The rest of the county followed soon after, except in the northwest corner. This area remained part of the Lewistown Reservation until 1832. Very few Americans moved there after the Indians left because the land was too swampy to farm or build homes. Settlement in this area did not begin in earnest until after the reservoir was built and much of the swampy land was covered with the lake. The population rose greatly after the state established Indian Lake State Park in 1898 and better roads and railroads reached the region from other places in the county starting in the early 20th century. The electronic books produced a good reproduction, but requires enlarging to 150-200% when viewing. They are indexed and searchable. And, to sweeten the deal, I have added a third book "Illinois Counties - Their Origin and Evolution". Tremendous aid in understanding the development of counties over time, and knowing the correct locations to search for your ancestor records. (Example - I have relatives that moved to SW VA late 1700's. They never moved again, but due to changes they resided in five different counties.) Randolph County was organized in 1795 out of a part of St. Clair County. It was named in honor of Edmund Randolph, Governor of Virginia. The Northwest Territory was captured from the British near the end of the Revolutionary War by the army of Virginia. Illinois then became, for a brief time, Illinois County, Virginia. Randolph County is located on the Mississippi River in southwestern Illinois. Its county seat is Chester. Owing to its role in the state's history, the county motto is "Where Illinois Began." Monroe County was formed in 1816 out of Randolph and St. Clair Counties, as the 8th county created from the then Illinois Territory. It was named in honor of James Monroe, who had just served as United States Secretary of War and who was elected President later that same year. Its first county seat was Harrisonville named for William Henry Harrison, former governor of the Northwest Territory and future President Waterloo assumed the mantle of county seat in 1825. The site of the old town of Harrisonville has since been submerged by the Mississippi River, Monroe County is part of the St. Louis Metro Area. Jackson County was organized in 1816, having been carved out of Randolph County. It was named for Andrew Jackson, who had just defeated the British at the Battle of New Orleans . As early as 1813, Conrad Will (namesake of Will County) conducted a large salt extraction operation, using slave labor, on the banks of the Big Muddy River, south of Murphysboro. As this area was in the "free" Northwest Territory, Will had to have legal exemptions to possess slaves. Perry County was formed in 1827 out of Jackson and Randolph Counties. It was named in honor of Oliver Hazard Perry who defeated the British fleet at the decisive Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812. Parts of Perry County were formerly included in Randolph, St. Clair and Jackson counties "Combined History" Book Contents: COUNTY HISTORY. CHAPTER I. A Brief Sketch of the North- West Territory. He also seeks living relatives, and has particular interest in heraldry, using DNA for genealogy, surnames and ancient family trees. His first book, Collins Tracing Your Family History (2004), contributed greatly to the increase in popularity of genealogy in the UK, and was soon followed by Collins Tracing Your Home’s History (2006), Full of Soup and Gold: the Life of Henry Jermyn (2006), Collins Need to Know? If you want to learn about the American Revolutionary War then any book will suffice. If you want to KNOW about same, one goes to Lossing.” In 1848 Benson J. Lossing set out on an 8,000 mile journey that took him to all of the thirteen original colonies and Canada. His mission was to see and record the stories of the American Revolution before they were lost to time and the rapid growth of the still young United States. Two years later, he published his Pictorial Field-Book of the Revolution. The two volume set contained over a 1,500 pages with illustrations from the author. It chronicles virtually every fight and skirmish of the war, the stories often gleaned from eyewitnesses or their children. If an American and a Briton stood on opposite banks of a stream and threw rocks at each other, chances are it's recounted in Lossing's fine work. Additionally, Lossing's book serves as a time capsule travelogue of what America was like in the years just prior to the Civil War. In this edition, editor Jack E. Fryar, Jr. has reproduced the chapters of Lossing's work that pertain specifically to North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Lavishly illustrated by Lossing's wonderful drawings and with meticulous end notes that read like a book in themselves, this seminal work is a super addition to any history collection of the Revolutionary War Other Lossing classics also offered in my EBay store: The Pictorial Field-Book of the War of 1812 The Pictorial Field-Book of the Civil War (All three Field-Books also available for purchase on a single CD, for greatest savings.)

Gifted with imperial imaginations, dauntless spirit, and adventurous dispositions, French explorers befriended the native Indian tribes and accompanied them on voyages into the vast hinterland that is now the heart of America. This volume contains narratives of the voyages of these discoverers and founders of the French empire in North America-- narratives that capture the explorers' bravery, endurance, enthusiasm, and achievements, as well as provide illuminating studies of Native American life and customs. The journals and memoirs contained herein cover the voyages of Jolliet and Marquette, La Salle, Nicolet, Perrot, Radisson, Tonty, and other pioneers in the Great Lakes and Mississippi area. With the exception of Radisson's journal, all were originally written in French. The largest of the so-called Five Civilized Tribes, which also included Choctaws, Chickasaws, Creeks, and Seminoles, the Cherokees were the first tribe to have a written language, and by 1820 they had even adopted a form of government resembling that of the United States. It is a lesser known fact that there was considerably more intermarriage between Cherokees and Whites than any other tribe, so they have a genealogical significance far out of proportion to their historical numbers. There is also a great deal of genealogical data on the Cherokees, mostly in the form of census records and enrollment records. All of which is to point out the abundance of sources available to Emmet Starr when he came to pen his classic History of the Cherokee Indians and Their Legends and Folklore. Not to diminish Mr. Starr's contribution in writing about the early Cherokees, their constitution, treaties with the federal government, land transactions, school system, migration and resettlement, committees, councils, and officials, religion, language, and culture, and a host of other topics upon which he writes eloquently, but his stated purpose in writing the History was "to make it as near a personal history and biography of as many Cherokees as possible." And in fact more than half the book is devoted to genealogies and biographies, of which there are several hundred. The biographies in particular, each averaging a paragraph or more, are noteworthy for their focus on the genealogical events of birth, marriage, and death over a period of several generations, naming thousands of related individuals in a classic roll-call of family members. Although written in 1921, Starr's pioneering work has never been superseded Contents CHAPTER I. Origin, Religion, Characteristics 21 CHAPTER II. 3. Family Maps of Michigan http://www.thefamilyhistorystore.com/maps-c-112.html See our website for surnames found in these books! Family Maps critically acclaimed book series. The Family Maps series of land patent books are published county-by-county, state-by-state, for original settlers whose purchases are indexed in the U.S. Bureau of Land Management Database. These are one-of-a-kind, customized maps and books created by attorney, software engineer and family historian, Greg Boyd. There are 3 maps for each of the Congressional townships that make up the county. Each Township has a Patent Map, Patent Index, Road Map, and a Map we call an Historical Map, which includes Waterways, Watercourses & Railroads. The Road and Historical Maps also include the City-centers and cemeteries that can be found at NationalAtlas.gov. There is also a Surname/Patent Index and a Surname/Township Index to help you dive into the right area of the County. Included Appendices identify multi-Patentee buying groups and also list the numerous Aliquot (section) parts you might find. These books are constructed to last with a plastic spiral binding, acid-free paper, and a tough, laminated cover. --- New counties added weekly.
