Nice try, but a very large number of people really do subscribe through Rootsweb, Ancestry and God knows what other gateway. They have no conception of what Usenet or a newsgroup is and little if any desire to learn. "Plonk 'em" means absolutely nothing to them. To them this looks and acts like a mailing list therefore it's a mailing list. They really can unsubscribe just as one can from a real mailing list, but like subscribers to every other mailing list, the 1st thing they do is delete the message they get that has important instructions. That would be the message that says, "Save this message for future use in unubscribing or changing your subscription". So the poor darlings have no conception of where they are or how to get away when they get a little miffed. What's this world coming too? Perhaps some kind soul who actually followed instructions and saves the instructions will help this poor soul. Freddie

The rootsweb mailing lists have managers, and the manager of this list has written privately to the person who seemed to be unaware of the newsgroup and gateway. I'm trying to put out this particular wildfire on the 4 Usenet/RootsWeb gateway lists I manage. A few years ago there were similar gatewayed mailing lists at Genexchange, but I am not sure whether they still exist. I am not aware of others. The advice "plonk em" is what I give (in different terms) as the best way to help stop the continuation of this junk, which is a kind of "newsgroup spam". The jerks who post this kind of thing post it from the newsgroup side of the gateway and are looking for attention - and hoping that the complaints will make it worse. People who respond hastily and REPOST THE WHOLE OFFENSIVE MESSAGE do exactly what the jerks want. Readers of the mailing list get a header line similar to what newsgroup readers see which includes all the newsgroups to which the message was cross-posted. When you see one of those headers with a lot of non-genealogy newsgroup names, just delete the message. Responding will not help anyone. The same advice goes to newsgroup readers. Why make it worse? For more than you want to know about the soc.genealogy newsgroups and their gateways with mailing list mirrors see: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~socgen/ Margaret manager of [email protected]

Manage away if you must, but please do not forget the following: NEWSGROUP: soc.genealogy.italian RFD Date: 19 Feb 1997 1st CFV Date: 17 Apr 1997 2nd CFV Date: 23 May 1997 Vote ended at 23:59:59 UTC, 8 May 1997. RESULT: unmoderated group soc.genealogy.italian passes 199:27 I was one of the original voters, and there was never any doubt as to how this newsgroup would operate. Note that from it's inception this newsgroup has been unmoderated. So please moderate/manage your Rootsweb lost souls off of our newsgroup so that peace may once again rule. We know how to ignore people who post for no other reason than to cause trouble. It is your little Rootsweb budies who get all bent out of shape and post these "Unsubscribe me" messages that do nothing but waste bandwidth. > The jerks who post this kind of thing post it from the newsgroup >side of the gateway and are looking for attention - and hoping that the >complaints will make it worse.
