Trying to find a translation if there is one for the first name (English) Pearl. I have run across an ancestor via Ellis Island but not sure if I am reading the name correctly. The name as shown on the manifest is what I can best make out to be "Providenzia". Thank You. -- "I have not failed. Perla is what I had come up with also. I took another look at the manifest and inlarged the section that I had thought was "Provienzia". After enlarging it I have determied that it is in fact two seperate names. My guess is that it is a surname followed by a first name.. It is somthing like "Prova?i, Ton??a. I am going to play a while and fill in the pixels on the enlargment to see what I may come up with. l'avvocato wrote: > Pearl = Perla > Providenzia = ??????? > "Frank S." <fselvaggio"*"@InsightBB.com> wrote in message news:<3CD5443E.6F89CB05@InsightBB.com>... > > Trying to find a translation if there is one for the first name > > (English) Pearl. > > > > I have run across an ancestor via Ellis Island but not sure if I am > > reading the name correctly. "Provienzia" is very different from "Providenzia". "Provienza" is assonant with a french region (Provenza) and "Provenza" is an italian family name also (not very usual). Perhaps is a family with french origins. Sure is not a first name. But if you have doubts about a family name you can go to : http://gens.labo.net/it/cognomi/genera.html Type the family name on the top and look at italian distribution. If you have no results probably the name is incorrect. If you have a picture you can put it on line (url). ciao

I'm quite used to read old papers... could You just provide the link to the Ellis Island Record You mention? I'll try to figure the correct spelling...... ciao Mauro -- REMOVE MAPS ON DON'T USE REPLY!! StGermainMAPS@ONexornandi.it
