    3. Hi list, I was wondering if any could tell me what theses numbers means. They appear above the name of my grandfather and great Aunt's name on the Ellis Island Manifest, the only two people on the whole manifest who have these numbers above their name. This is how it looks: 6-59938 6-505-1/20/39 Fallavollita Maria Anna 21 housewife yes 6-35301- 2-14-35 Fallavollita Pasquale 15 farmer help yes Any help or advice is most welcome. Thanks, Terry Baisden PS. By the way I don't know if this is important to these numbers or not . They were from Pentima(now Corfinio)Italy and they left Italy from Naples. _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com

    3. My grandmother had the same remarks next to her name on the manifest. She arrived with my grandfather on 4/15/1910 from Naples. I believe the number 2-981553- 6/24/42 may have been a verification number for her "Application for Certificate of Identification (Aliens of Enemy Nationalities)" The copy of this form was dated stamped Feb 11 1942. There was no annotation next to my grandfathers name. He passed away in 1933. It is my opinion, without basis, that it had something to do with verifying date of arrival for Alien Registration. I also have the "Alien Registration Form" this form was stamp dated Sep 23 1940. My grandmother and grandfather returned to Italy and re-entered the US in 1917. They traveled separately at that time. My grandmother traveled with my father age 4 and his sister (both born earlier in the US) and 2 year old brother who was born in Italy. There were annotations as to the status of my father and his sister. There were no additional numbered annotations next to her name but she was traveling under her maiden name as all unaccompanied married women did. Again my grandfather had no annotations next to his name on the passenger list. Now the question arises as to when did the Government stop annotating this passenger lists? When were the passenger lists microfiche and by whom? Are the original passenger lists still being annotated? Were they annotated after being microfiche? Mike Setaro

I believe these are dates and case numbers added to the manifests by a case worker when the individuals had applied for naturalization. The case worker, for lack of a better term, was simply verifying that an indiviual had arrived in the U.S. when they said they did and noting that this had been verified. I've heard other explanations, but this seems the most logical to me. I've seen lots of other kinds of notations on manifests, but the type you describe seem, to me, to be most probably associated with the naturalization process. Frank F.

    3. Frank You may be correct in your analysis, but in my grandmothers case, she never became a US citizen. She carried a Green Card until she died in 1974. Mike Setaro

    3. This is a reply to my inquiry to the Immigration and Naturalization. In my grandmothers case it was when she registered as a resident alien. Mike Setaro. These annotations usually represent a check of the original arrival record. These checks were conducted when someone applied for US citizenship or when they registered as resident aliens. If your grandmother was not naturalized before 1941 and was from one of the Axis powers, it is possible that there was a question relating to her resident alien status. The number may be either a certificate of naturalization case number or it could be her "A" number. In either case, you should contact the Immigration and Naturalization Service for a search. The Immigration and Naturalization Service Form G-639, Freedom of Information/Privacy Act Request, is available online at www.ins.usdoj.gov/forms/download/g-639.htm. The form should be mailed to the Immigration and Naturalization Service office in your area. Please consult the telephone directory. I have noticed that there was an annotation next to my grandmothers name with what appears to be a file number and the date. For example; 2-981553- 6/24/42. My question is; what is the number and date mean. I would appreciate it if you can respond to my request. Thanks Mike Setaro
