It's the best all-round source for looking up archaic words. It's a shelf full of volumes, found in large libraries. After this either Garzante or Zingarelli's Dictionary are excellent references. The Italian version is preferred, again because of archaic usage. Used copies are available on bibliofind.com or bookfinder.com. Italian-English dictionaries - I have Collins, but Garzante is also good. In addition for really obscure words there are regional and dialect dictionaries and glossaries. I have found Dizionario Etimologico Italiano by Carlo Battisti and Giovanni Alessio helpful.
