    3. I just found out when I went to http://www.dellarocchetta.com/ And clicked on the Favorite Links Page and used the Italian & Global Surname Navigator, it gave me a lot of pop up pages. One of these pages was to Google. It showed every posting I made to GEN-ITALIAN-L@rootsweb.com. In other words, what you and I and everyone posts to this list, is not private or limited to those subscribed to this list. I assume then, that is true of other email lists that we all belong to. Makes you think twice before you say anything. Am I the only ignorant one who did not know this? Sharon DiLuvio

If I may give you a little more new knowledge, this is NOT an "email list" it is a news group. News groups are extremely public. Most likely what you sayhere will be floating aroung in cyberspace for your great grandchildren to find. That's why Frank F. is not my real name and I use a phoney email address because the newsgoups are the numbner one area where junk emailers find people to add to their lists. I can get help with my genealogy questions and maybe help someone else as Frank F. , Tom Mix, Superman or anyone else. I also would be a fool to publish my real email address here as well. A few years ago everybody understood that and acted accordingly. Now days, various entities like Rootweb make it possible to "subscribe" to newsgroups and they, the newsgroups look and act like email lists, ie people get the posts as email rather than with news reader software as many of us still do. Real email lists have some of the same problems. For example if their messeges are archived, and plenty of them are, and the public has acess to the archived messages...well you get the picture. Try the Comunes of Italy email list. No Archives. You can post some of the names your researching, but no one gets your email address. If there are any inquiries about your names, your given the person's name and contact them if you want to.There are a few people from the Comunes of Italy (COI) who hang out here from time to time, but lots more experienced researchers on the list itself. Go here to subscribe: http://www.comunesofitaly.org/index.htm If you insist on continuing here, you need a "nickname" and at least need to "doctor" your email address as you may have noticed others doing here so the automatic address harvesters the junk mailers use will be fooled. Look at some of the posts here and notice things like: fredspam@abc.com remove spam for correct address. The real address, of course, is fred@abc.com. This is so common and normal that there's even a newly coined word to describe the practice. It's called "munging" your address. Good luck. Frank F.

[snip] > to this list, is not private or limited to those subscribed Hi Sharon, The big genealogy search you refer to is by a *very* dedicated genealogist/programmer: Rob Kuijsten. He does a lot of hard work to maintain his search engines. This is his main link: http://www.kuijsten.net This is the direct link to the Italian search you found: http://www.rat.de/kuijsten/navigator/italy/italy.html Here are some other helpful links of his which he programs himself: http://www.rat.de/kuijsten/navigator/ http://www.kuijsten.net/usenet_search/genealogy.html news:soc.genealogy.italian is picked up by the Rootsweb gen-italian mail list from Usenet and distributed by Rootsweb to your email box because of your mail-list subscription. Everything you post is archived forever on google unless you use a no archive header. I have not seen that option on Rootsweb and have seen things on their archives, which are no longer on google. You might ask them about it if you are concerned. This topic comes up about 4 times a year when some other reader finally figures it out so you might want to read some past postings, etc. Google has about 20 years stored because they bought out the old Deja News Archives. You can Search & Read this newsgroup, via your web-browser, here: http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&group=soc.genealogy.italian or the long way = http://groups.google.com/ Go to the soc. listings: http://groups.google.com/groups?group=soc&hl=en click on soc.genealogy.* (20 groups) soc.genealogy.italian http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&group=soc.genealogy.italian Have fun, Paula Marie Nigro http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwisdom/index.html or mirrors with no popups for those without popup disabler software: http://anzwers.org/free/italiangen/ http://www.envirocare.net/genealogy/index.html
