If your grandfather left Italy after 1880, and you know his last place of residence there,You could also request a Certificato di stato di famiglia (family certificate) from the Ufficio Anagrafe there. I'm not sure when or if they stopped doing them, but they would have all the members of his family listed (if her were married) as well as records of children who have died very young , if not, then if you can get the death certificate and send for the family certificate for his father. Italy is one of the few, if only, countries that has these. You can also go to the 1920 US census for the area you believe he lived, It was the only year, I believe, that gave the year that a person immigrated as well as the year they were naturalized (if they were naturalized at all) If you do not live in the state hen your local Family history center can send for the films for you and you can use them there.
