It is important to narrow down the geographical area as much as possible. You don't have to be great in Italian, but making an effort to communicate in that language will be warmly received. We got by on a couple of introductory tapes, a phrase book and a dictionary. If you know any Spanish, most Italians will be able to understand you well enough. Jeff DeMarco
