    1. Anyone can help with a search on ancestry.com?
    2. I'm looking for a couple, husband and wife, for a person here on the list who asked for help :) The man's name was something like Vincent James Diorio, or James Vincent Diorio, which would let me think his Italian name could either have been Vincenzo or Giacomo, hopefully. HIs wife's maiden name was Mildred Iorio, then it became, once married, Mildred Diorio. Can anyone who has access to ancestry.com search for a Mildred Diorio in the censuses and see if there's one living with a Vincenzo, Vincent, etc. ? Thanks a lot in advance, Fabio

    2. Hi Dawna, Maybe I can help you. Do you know approximately how old were they when they died? That would help me know when were they born, so I can guess their birth year and look for them on the ship lists for ellis island. I've found a reference to a Mildred Diorio living in Philadelphia in 1930. Could it be her? 1930 United States Federal Census Record Census View Image Name: Mildred Diorio Birth: abt 1897 Residence: 1930 - city, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Dawna Clark ha scritto: > I am beginning a search for two families who arrived in NYC in the > early 1900's and don't know where to even begin. I have no information on where in Italy they came from. Their first child was born here in the US in approximately 1917 and they came separately and married here. Vincent James Diorio or James Vincent Diorio and Mildred Terranova. No names of parents. Would anyone have any suggestions?

Nice Week-End, Fabio

    3. Actually, this was very bad handwriting. Here's a rough translation, from what I could understand: Today, 22 October 1889, at 1:33 p.m., in the town hall, in front of me (goes on with his name), officer of the Civil Archive of the Comune of Bedonia, appeared Berni Giuseppe (son) of the late Francesco, aged 26, farmer living in (name of the place), who declared me that at 6:15 p.m., 19th of the current month, in the house from Parmigiani Elisabetta, aged 24, peasant, (can't read the following sentence but maybe for a couple of words, 'seco lui domiciliata e convivente' meaning 'living in the same house with him...) was born a child, of female sex, which isn't here now (literally, whom I'm not being shown), and whose name is Angela Maria. Witnesses of this act were Parmigiani Antonio, aged 56, day labourer (I read something like 'giornaliere') and Berni Davide, aged 70, peasant, both living in this Commune. I can't understand much of the ending lines, but it looks like some formal bureaucratic document ending, in my opinion. Also, I can't read perfectly the name of the place where the house was. Here's a list of the current hamlets in the comune of Bedonia: Alpe, Anzola, Calice, Caneso, Casalporino, Cavignaga, Chiesola, Carniglia, Casaleto, Cornolo, Drusco, Illica, Masanti, Montarsiccio, Montevacà (Passo del Bocco), Nociveglia, Ponteceno, Pontestrambo, Romezzano, Scopolo, Serra, Spora, Strepeto, Tasola. It seems to me the place name in the document looks similiar to Nociveglia, but I'm not sure. Some considerations: Parent names: Giuseppe Berni and Elisabetta Parmigiani (Parmegiani is very rare in Italy, whereas there are lots of Parmigiani, even in the area were Bedonia is). In Bedonia there's also a paintings museum named Parmigiani. Angelina's official name: Angela Maria. Witnesses: usually they can or cannot be relatives, but in this case I'd think so, as their surnames are the same as those of Maria's relatives. Have you already seen Angela's Ellis Island papers? <http://ellisisland.org/search/passRecord.asp?pID=102283160304> She arrived in US in 1906, together with other people from Bedonia. Hope I could help a little, Fabio

    3. Hi! I received the birth certificate of my great grandmother Angel Berni from Bedonia,Parma,Italy today. I'm having a lot of difficulty reading the Italian Script (I do OK with the typed copies!) Can anyone help me out? Does it list any names of grandparents on here (giuseppe di ??). That is a large bit of text on the bottom written in, is that typical? There are two names (witnesses?), does it give their relations? It says something like giaradiara after one, and "peasant" after the other. After the mothers name, I see it calls her 24 years old, and a peasant, and then a whole lot of words I can't read. Does it give birth locations for the parents? Thanks to anyone who can help!! I've posted the image here: (it is big!) http://www.branchpike.com/berniAngelinaBirth.jpg

    3. Ciao a tutti! Potrebbero negarmi i dati? Come funziona in altri paesi europei ed extraeuropei? Grazie! Elisa -- ---- ESP

USA phone directory at http://www.infobel.com/usa/ has 293 Ortu, 18 Mameli, no Tiloca, 5 Gaius, and no Cabizzosu listings. Italy phone directory at http://www.infobel.com/italy has 1,413 Ortu listings, 78 of them in Sassari. There are also 45 Mameli, 5 Tiloca, no Gaius, and 12 Cabizzosu in Sassari. There are no Gaius listings in the whole of Italy. The Australia residential phone directory is at http://www.whitepages.com.au/wp/resSearch.jhtml You must search by choosing each state in turn, as well as choosing Metropolitan or Regional Area. So the search is rather slow, but possible. We found 6 listings of Ortu in the Metropolitan Area of the State of Victoria. We will leave it up to you to check the other surnames you listed. If you are interested in other countries' telephone directories, you can go to http://www.infobel.com/teldir/ to find them. Good luck on your search. Joe in Georgetown, Texas, USA
