Although I have tried to find something on the Internet, I seem to "land in the wrong place"! I can search in French/Italian, so any signposts would be much appreciated. With best wishes Sylvia J. Hi Laura, Don't believe I can help you decide what the proper name is. It is possible the census enumerator or the individual who transcribed the census for the index screwed up the name in all of the censuses. I cannot read the image in 1900. In 1910 it is indexed as Agniello, in 1920 Vanella and in 1930 Agnello. In the 1910 census Michael and Millie are living with Millie's father who is indexed as Dominek Comadeca. You have requested the marriage certificate. Other records you need to search for are the death certificates which often have the parents names. If you know the dates of death look for their obituaries which will give the proper spellings. The 1930 census indicates Michael was naturalized. Check the naturalization records in Philadelphia. Have you looked for the family on Ellis Island. The 1910 census indicates Michael arrived in the U.S. in 1904, however, the 1920 and 1930 censuses indicate 1900. Did Michael and Millie have Social Security Numbers. If so, you can request information from the Social Security Administration. At this point, I don't have any other recommendations. If you want to contact me off list you can email me at csaunders65@gmail.com. Mike

    3. My references tell me the first census was in 1871 and was taken every ten years. The same source says the early censuses were not very useful, identifying only the head of household and giving headcount of other family members. It wasn't until the 20th century the censuses had better information. There are no surnames like this in the GENS site on the Internet at http://www.gens.labo.net/ Italy phone directory at also has no Beredetto nor Berendetto listings. But there are some Benedetto surnames in the phone directory and at GENS. We could not find Beredetto nor Berendetto at either Ellis Island, nor Castle Garden immigration sites. And there are 1,383 listings of Benedetto at Ellis Island. And we believe we see the Angelina Benedetto that you mention as being not of the right age, 17 instead of an expected 10. Is that correct? And did you just make a typo? Are we correct in assuming that the surname you are searching for is Benedetto? Joe in Texas
