My letters to the Anagrafe took about 2 to 2 1/2 months to get a response. They wrote back both times, but it took a painstakingly long time to get them! I always included an email address, but never got an email response. Anytime I've written to the INS, they send a paper telling they have assigned a case number or something like that to your name. That seems like it only took a couple weeks to get back, then the actual search took a couple months maybe. If the INS never sent you a response that they were searching, I think I'd write again. That has happened to me. I think they lose things sometimes! I sent a letter to the L'Ufficiale Di Anagrafe of Bagnoli Irpino back on Jan 22, 2002. I wondered how long I should wait before sending a follow-up letter. I enclosed a bank draft in Euro's (not that easy to get), but forgot to put my e-mail address on the letter. If I could find an e-mail address for them, should I follow up by e-mail or regular mail? Also, what is the normal time for Declaration of Intent/Naturalization response from INS? I mailed that back on Jan 2nd. Thanks in advance for the advice. Hi Lorrie I have found lots of data on all 3 of your names of interest. Go to my family website http://www.dellarocchetta.com/ and on the favorite links page there are many research sites. The Italian & Global Surname Navigator has all of that data. Click on Italy type the lastname and leave all the checks active. Many sites will come up the Italian Phone Book has 250+ on everyone of yours name. Google has data the last 2 sites has most of the data. The Surname site is a little tricky so go slow at first. When you get to your names in the last 2 data sites click on them as there is more data in the background. Also in my site there is a link to tell you where in Italy they live today and a link to find most towns in Italy. But the best research today is through the Mormon Church Family History Library. Bonjour. MERCI D'AVANCE Blandine

Hi Everyone!! Thanks for the replys!! :) After reading all the responses I got.. I did some more Research... I Great-Granfather actually died and is buried in Georgetown, KY (he died in 1911) So the records I have found are for a return from a visit to Italy. The funny thing is that my Great Grandfather returned in April of 1909 and the rest of the family returned in September of the same year. In talking with my mother about it all, she claims that my grandfather never talked about a trip to Italy as a child other than their return in 1911 after my great grandfather passed away and his mother could not support the family here in the states.... Nonno returned to the US in the 1920's and settled in CA. Anyway, now I am off to write letters to my family for more information....I am trying to get as much information as I can from living relatives at this point. My dad's family is starting to pass on and I really want to get as much history as I can before all of my grandparents generation is gone! Thanks again everyone for all your help!! -- Karen http://www.crochetlegacy.com

Perhaps, your great great grandfather who died in Italy became sick around 1909, your grandfather and great grandfather went to Italy at that time to tend to a farm or other family issues, when your great great grandfather passed away, they took care of matters and then returned in 1911. What would be interesting is did they bring additional family members with them from Italy on this return trip? Hope this is helpful. Vicky vas575@aol.com
Hi The best research to day is at the Mormon Church Family History Library. They have volunteers to help you etc. It is not necessary to be a member to use the facility. Go there with all the data that you have. Get all the death certificates from the state in the US that you know someone died in. Go to my family website http://www.dellarocchetta.com/ and on the favorite links page there are many research tools. There are links to a Italian Surname Navigator and the Family History Library Location. I hope this helps you Ciao steve JGEverts wrote: > Hello, > > I was wondering if anyone is doing research on these surnames (Pensabene & > Pellicano)? > > All I know about my great grandmother is: > Name: Pellicano, Santa > > Ethnicity: Italian > > Place of Residence: Gallico > > Date of arrival: November 02, 1902 > > Age at arrival: 13y > > Gender: F > > Marital Status: S > > Ship: Sicilian Prince > > Port of dept.: Naples, Campania, Italy > > And she married my great grandfather Pasquale Pensabene. scopo ricerca storica cerco notizie su famiglia Contrisciani residenti prov teramo abruzzo .chi puo aiutarmi? ciao fausto
This is a reply to my inquiry to the Immigration and Naturalization. In my grandmothers case it was when she registered as a resident alien. Mike Setaro. These annotations usually represent a check of the original arrival record. These checks were conducted when someone applied for US citizenship or when they registered as resident aliens. If your grandmother was not naturalized before 1941 and was from one of the Axis powers, it is possible that there was a question relating to her resident alien status. The number may be either a certificate of naturalization case number or it could be her "A" number. In either case, you should contact the Immigration and Naturalization Service for a search. The Immigration and Naturalization Service Form G-639, Freedom of Information/Privacy Act Request, is available online at www.ins.usdoj.gov/forms/download/g-639.htm. The form should be mailed to the Immigration and Naturalization Service office in your area. Please consult the telephone directory. Old Military and Civil Records, National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, DC 20408. >>> "Mike Setaro" <jsetaro@att.net> 02/23/02 11:36AM >>> Sir I have been researching my family's arrival in America in the early 1900's. I have noticed that there was an annotation next to my grandmothers name with what appears to be a file number and the date. For example; 2-981553- 6/24/42. My question is; what is the number and date mean. I would appreciate it if you can respond to my request. Thanks Mike Setaro
The manifests are records of arrivals not returns. I was also surprised to find that my grandfather arrived in America in 1906, 1910 and 1916. I was aware of the 1906 and 1910 but not the 1916. I knew that my grandmother returned to Italy after my father and my aunt were born in America. I assumed that my grandfather cared for the children, in America, while she was in Italy caring for her parents. She returned a few years later with my uncle who was born in Italy and was 2 years old. I later found that she had returned with my father, my aunt and my 2 year old uncle in 1916. A further search of the records found that my grandfather returned to America a month or two prior to my grandmothers return in 1916. The latter records were found on-line with the Ellis Island records site.
I have a question! I was using the Ellis Island Site to see if I could find some information about my family's arrival to the US. I have found quite a few people! But I found something really interesting that I am not sure what it is telling me. My Grandfather was born in Georgetown, Ky in 1903. His father died in 1911. My Great Grandmother took my grandfather and his 2 siblings back to Italy shortly there after. Now I thought I had found the manifests of their return to Italy, but then when I started to really look at them, the dates were all wrong. It was 1909 that the manifests were showing. However, there is no mistake that these are my Grandfather and his family. But I am wondering, do manifest only discuss the arrival of immegrants or do they also tell us about leaving the US as well. If they are just arrivals, I have to assume that my grandfather's family went back to Italy for a visit and this is their return. Thanks!! -- Karen http://www.crochetlegacy.com Researching: Ratto, Paoletti, Parducci, Perata
