The woman at the office wanted a written request though, because of the language difficulties, and because it would be easier for them when they are trying to do the search for me. They also said it could take a while because they had so many men in that area by the same name as my great grandfather. She seemed a bit surprised when I asked if I should send any money along with my letter. So who say you have to send money to these offices? She gave me the impression that they are indeed happy to tell people abroad about their roots in their village. So I gather you don't need to worry! :-) Maria in Norway

I never know how to do these mail list things, so if I've committed another faux pas, please find it in your hearts to forgive it this time. To the individuals on this list, we've corresponded in the past and I'd like to continue that pattern. I've changed my servers - going from my old dial up to a cable modem, so my email address had to change as well. Believe me, this has been stressful enough - This is why I have not been corresponding with anyone in a while, nor have I had a chance to catch up on reading any of my emails on my old AOL server. However, I certainly hope to be doing that soon. I don't want to lose any subscriptions as I value those lists I am on! Please remove the old address and add the new one, so I don't lose any. I'd really appreciate it. I'll be phasing out AOL by mid March. Subscribe/Unsubscribe Please change your address book to reflect my new email address - I was Historicgenes@aol.com I am now Historic@tampabay.rr.com Thank you. Linda T. Searching names: Campobella di Licata - Terranova, D'Agostino, Caizza, Sciaccia, Montana. Velladolmo - Gennuso, Bellano, Anio. Ventimiglia - Iannello, Giardina.

My great-grandfather served in the Italian Calvary around 1890. Does anyone know where I can get his military records? Thanks for any help you can offer. Here is a post from ItalyNW that may help. --- vikandgra wrote: > G'day, can anyone advise me where to send to for world war 1 army > service records ? Hi Graham, As Larry pointed out, the first place to check for military records is the Family History Library catalog. Since military records are kept by the provincial archives, you would search for "Brescia" rather than the town. Family History Library Catalog http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp If military records for Brescia haven't been microfilmed, you can write to the provincial archive of Brescia for the records as Felicia suggested. Archivio di Stato di Brescia Via Galilei, 44 25124 Brescia There are a few sample letters available online, though most are for writing for birth and marriage records. You can just alter them to request the registro di leva (draft record), registro dei fogli matricolari (service record) and foglio di congedo illimitato (discharge record). You may not get all three documents, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Italian Letter-Writing Guide http://www.familysearch.com/Eng/Search/Rg/guide/LGItalian.asp David's Letters to Italy http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwisdom/Davids_form_letters.html I received the draft record and service record for my grandfather from the provincial archive in Alessandria. I've uploaded scans of the documents to our website if you want to look at them. They are in the FILES section in the folder called "Italian Genealogical Records". http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ItalyNW/files/ Good luck, Regina GRIFFERO, GUALCO, GUASSARDO, NORANDO - Capriata d'Orba, Alessandria ----- Original Message ----- From: "Just Me!" <ktrpelle.nospam@hotmail.nospam.com> To: <GEN-ITALIAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 04, 2002 7:43 PM Subject: Pre WWI Itilian Military records---Pre WWI italiano Militare dischi > My great-grandfather served in the Italian Calvary around 1890. I received a phone call at 11:30 last night telling me that the g-g-parents I have searched for likely came from S. Agata di Milletello, Messina, Sicily Is anyone familiar with this area or any of the surnames that follow? I am looking for Giuseppe, Filippo, Margherita and possibly others born in the 1870-1880's children of Santo(a) CATALFO and most likely Rose or Mary (her maiden name is unknown at this time). Giuseppe married Antonia GIUFFRE/GUIFFRE; Filippo married Concetta COSELLO; Margherita married (1) Francesco GRANATA and (2) Santo PILLUAFITO. All came to the Cleveland area, but it is believed that Filippo (Philippo) returned to Sicily after the death of a child in 1913. No further record has been found for this family. I do not read any Italian, but have a very firm determination that has cut through brick wall after brick wall in Cleveland, Ohio to get me to Sicily. I am not about to let a little thing like not having a clue what I am doing stop me! <g> Suggestions as to what direction to take first would be most welcome. I appreciate any help, Sharon
