    3. In fact all Roosweb lists are being inactivated and archived. I am shocked about this. We've been sharing information and helping one another on the lists for many years. Thank you subscribers and contributors over these 20+ years. Some of these tech lists never took off and I presume will not be missed. Here is the text of the announcement to all of us listowners: Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. 1. [Gen-IRC] Rootsweb lists are alive again!
    2. Valorie Zimmerman
    3. Hello everybody, After some months, RootsWeb mailing lists are up and running on updated software. A few things are changed, some for the better. One of the items currently being addressed is why messages from subscribers are not always going directly to the list. Sometimes these posts are being held for administrative action. This could be because the poster - although subscribed to the list - may not be registered with RootsWeb. So my advice is to register with RootsWeb. It takes only a few moments and might fix the posting issues. Instructions: http://home.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/setupmail If you had an account set up before, you can use the same email and username, but you *must* choose a new password. If you are an Ancestry member, please do not use the same password as you use there. One of the great things about registering is that you will be able to control many things about your list mail from Rootsweb without contacting the listowner. All the best, Valorie list admin -- http://about.me/valoriez

    1. [Gen-IRC] Safe on the other side, & Special note to Digest subscribers
    2. Valorie Zimmerman
    3. Hi all, it seems that our list has been migrated to the new system, and all is well. Please report any problems privately, to the -admin address (listname-admin@rootsweb.com, no -L, no -D). And speaking of no -L, no -D: if you have not yet added our listname without the -L to your addressbook, do so now while you are thinking of it. Don't remove the old one yet, since some people will still use the old address, and that will work for awhile. *** If you are an AOL subscriber, it is *crucial* that you put the new list address in your addressbook. *** Now, Digests -- you can no longer subscribe to both the list posts and the digests with the same email address. If you formerly were, you have lost one or the other at this point. Because of the way that the new list software handles the lists, you will have to sub to the other mode with an alternate address. If you need a free gmail account, write to me at valorie dot zimmerman at gmail dot com and I will send you an invitation. Hotmail and Yahoo will also work. If you are subbed one way and prefer the other, drop me a note at the -admin address and I'll change you over. Soon you will be able to do this for yourself, plus various other stuff, which is very exciting! Finally, if you like the way the digests now arrive, great! If you would prefer MIME digests, which are easier for some OE users, please drop a note to the -admin address and I will change you over to MIME digests. It takes just a sec, so don't hesitate to ask. Valorie

    1. [Gen-IRC] [ADMIN] List migration to new software
    2. Valorie Zimmerman
    3. Hi, all. Rootsweb has moved our list to a new list system. You may notice nothing, or some small differences. You probably got an email from "announce@mail.rootsweb.com" explaining what was happening, unless it landed in your SPAM folder. If you need to see the entire email, please contact me privately. However, here is a list of the changes you might notice: 1. Digest subscribers will notice a small difference in the layout, volume and issue numbers of the list digests. If your digests arrive in a different format than you are used to and you would like it changed, contact me privately at the list admin address, which stays the same: LISTNAME-admin@rootsweb.com. Also, if you run into any unusual or confusing occurrences with mail from this list that could possibly be related to the changeover, let me know at the admin address. 2. The "-L" is being dropped from the official list name. This means the "from" address your mailing list emails come from will be slightly different- ListName@rootsweb.com instead of the current ListName-L@rootsweb.com. ** You may have to adjust your spam filters or put the new address on your "accept" list to prevent it from being caught in your "junk" folder. ** If you use email headers to filter list mail to a special folder in your email program, check whether your filters will need tweaking under the new system. 3. If you previously subscribed to the list in both L and D modes using the same email address you will find that you are no longer subbed in Digest mode. The new software doesn't permit the same address to be subbed in both L and D modes. Therefore, if you wish to receive both modes, you will need to subscribe to the digests using a different email address. Write to me at valorie dot zimmerman at gmail dot com if you would like an invite to gmail, one of the free email systems available. Yahoo and Hotmail will also work well. This sounds like a big change, but it doesn't have to change the way you use the list. Here's why: - You will still be able to send messages to the list using the "ListName-L@rootsweb.com" email address you use today. Additionally, you can choose to drop the "-L" and send your messages to ListName@rootsweb.com. Both addresses will work after the list has been migrated. - You will still be able to subscribe and unsubscribe to the mail or digest mode by sending your request to ListName-L-request@rootsweb.com or ListName-D-request@rootsweb.com as you do today. You will also be able to unsubscribe from the mail or digest mode by sending your "unsubscribe" message to LISTNAME-request@rootsweb.com. Be sure to use the command in the Subject line, not just the body of the message. --- Please continue to send your queries, data, and responses to the list as usual. It is a great time to post a new query to try to break down those brick walls. I have a number of lists moving in the first batch; sorry for the form letter! Eventually we will all be very happy that this move was made, difficult as it is for the staff and list administrators right now. It's like moving from an old house with a leaky roof and bad plumbing into a new modern place -- very cool, but the move is still difficult! All the best, Valorie PS: There was a little problem, if you were subscribed to both the list and digest mode -- You are now subscribed to the digest instead of the list as was planned. Options: 1. write to me at the -admin address (listname-admin@rootsweb.com, no -L, no -D) and ask me to change you from digest to list, 2. Sub to the list mode with a different email address. After you get a digest or two, write me if you don't like the new format. I can change you back to MIME if you prefer it. It takes me only a second.

Actually, IRC isn't "on the web" nor does it have anything to do with email. Of course, we have this LIST about it, but this list is just that, a list. IRC is a way to talk with others, and you use IRC software to do that. If you want to use AIM to chat, you have to use the AIM software to do that. Also ICQ, MSN -- or IRC. There are a few programs who can handle all types of chat, such as GAIM, and Trillian. You can read about this on their websites (and on my Beginner's page). > Now how do I establish or search within this GENIRC? One thing I need to as k. > Where would I find explanations of the various websites that exist at this time. I know exactly how you feel, Mary. Before I was introduced to IRC, I had *no idea* what it was, or how it worked. I had to set up the software for a job I was going to do (the Rootsweb HelpDesk), and just fell in love with it! For some reason, Americans are really scarce in IRC. Lots and lots of the rest of the world uses it, however, so it is a great way to connect with international researchers. For an example of that, see the project my partner Jean-Pierre Daeschler and I have set up at http://alsachat.net . JP and I have never met "in person" -- he is in France, and I'm in Washington state. But we chat weekly about Alsace genealogy. :-) Download and install mIRC or some other IRC software, and chat us up! http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.com/~valorie/IRC-Beginners.htm Valorie

This list was established to give people a way to tell others about chats they are hosting about genealogy topics, on various IRC servers. IRC means Internet Relay Chat, and is accessed using (mostly) free software in Windows, Linux and Mac operating systems. If you don't yet use IRC, there is more information on my page for beginners: http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.com/~valorie/IRC-Beginners.htm Just to be clear, this is not a *website* -- it is a list. To chat with me most days, click irc://irc.rootsweb.com/rootsweb-admins, or AIM: valoriez5353, MSN: valoriez@zimres.net . All the best, Valorie

Yes, your address is subbed, or you would not be getting list posts, nor would you be able to successfully post. This list was established quite awhile ago, to let people who are interested in chatting about genealogy in IRC (Internet Relay Chat) find out where and when the chats are scheduled.
