The LDS Church announced Sunday at its conference that they were planning to build six more Temples. They are to be in Lubbock Texas, Tri-Cities Washington, Snowflake Arizona, Asuncion Paraguay, Helsinki Finland, and Aba Nigeria. That last one, Aba Nigeria, will be of significant interest to genealogists, mainly those with African ancestries. Why? Because of the need to develop a new method to handle vital events before the African nations adopted the Western calendar and recorded vital event dates by that method. The LDS Church is working on that issue right now. What may come out of this is a way to tie an individual to his/her parents, etc., by way of relationships or some method similar, again due to the fact that they, before adopting the Western calendar, handled time and date events differently than we did. I do not know what that will be. They hope to have the Temple up and running within 15-30 months depending on how long it takes to get the necessary government approvals for the construction of the Temple itself. -- James W.
