Saludos, Margarita Mulet Hello and a very happy year 2000 to you, your family and all the Mulets round the globe! My name is Elaine Mulet - Hocking, I live in Puerto Rico, and was thrilled to learn there was a Guillaume Mulet living in Amsterdam during the 1600, because my grandfather, my father and my brother's name is Guillermo (Guillaume in Spanish). I named my youngest Enrique Guillermo and most of my cousins and nephews are also called Guillermo, so it seems the name is a tradition that goes back several centuries. I did a bit of sleuthing on the Mulet surname for a graduate intercultural communications class and this is what I learned: It seems that the Mulets originally came from Syria (Mulet means being born in Syrian). They became involved in a fierce dynastic war between two sides of the Ummayyad royal family. The losing side joined the first Moslem migrations that settled in the South of Spain during the 8th century; the Mulet family settled in the villages of Alaró and Muro, in Majorca, the biggest of the Balearic Islands. In 1343 a Berengario Mulet from the village of Muro, representing the family, honored and pledged loyalty to Pedro IV, King of Aragón and thus became Christian. As you know, in 1492 the Catholic King Fernando and Queen Isabella expelled from Spain the Arab and Jewish people who kept their original faiths and did not receive the Catholic Sacrament of Baptism. That could be one way to explain the Mulet lineage in France and later in Amsterdam. (???) Let us know if you can learn more. We are planning a meeting of all the Mulet from Puerto Rico and the part of our family that lives in Venezuela. We scheduled it for March 16, 2000. Wouldn't it be a wonderful surprise to everybody if you could come and meet this side of the family? Cualquier información me sería interesante. > Gracias MP > > --------------------------------- > Do You Yahoo!? > Talk to your friends online with Yahoo!
