In Spain and France the notaries kept the records regarding vital statistics (birth, death, marriage). Find the date of death then look for the town notaries for that date. The records are hand written and may well be in the national archives or the town archives, if the town had an archives. Also, there is a possibility tyhat the person was a Catholic, then check the largest churches in existence at the time or the synagogue as the case may be. Buena fortuna!!
