    3. QUICK TIP <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ============================================================ Although I was excited to receive copies of my ancestors' newspaper obituaries, I kept running into a small obstacle: I was given the newspaper date (the date the obituary was printed), but not the actual date of death. The text would read: "Sylvia Walker died Saturday afternoon at her home," or "Mrs. Bettie Warfield, age 49, died of heart failure early Tuesday morning." Since I didn't know the day of the week the newspaper printed the obituary, I was unable to extract an exact date of death; consequently, I was unable to request a copy of the certified death certificate from the Office of Vital Statistics (which could lead to further ancestral info, such as parents' names). Then I discovered a 10,000-year calendar on the Internet. I plug in the newspaper date--say, 4/14/1913, a calendar is generated on-screen, and then I can see what Tuesday date preceded the newspaper date--the actual date of death I needed! I'm sure there are other such online calendars, but this one works just great for me: http://www.calendarhome.com/tyc/ Valerie Jordan-Jones -- Grand parents Raising Grandchildren Support Group 1st Wednesday of month---7:00 P.M. 1. FYI: Texas Birth and Death Indexes
    2. Dani
    3. I am forwarding this from another list that I subscribe to. -Danielle ============================ Texas birth and death indexes We are making progress in Austin! >From http://www.tdh.state.tx.us/bvs/registra/index.htm : As of March 2000, Birth indexes from 1926-1995 and death indexes from 1964-1998 are available on the internet (free), microfiche ($) or CD-ROM ($$). Birth indexes from 1903-1925 and death indexes from 1903-1963 are available on microfiche only. Indexes for open records years are referred to as general indexes and indexes for years which are not yet open to the public are called summery indexes. The SUMMARY death index is delayed six months, the SUMMARY birth index is delayed 42 months. The time lag for the birth index is necessary in order to protect the confidentiality of adoptions and paternity determinations. The Summary Birth Index includes the last, first, and middle name, if any, of the registrant, date of birth, county of birth, and sex of registrant. The Summary Death Index includes the last, first, and middle name, if any, of the decedent, date of death, county of death, and sex of registrant. All indexes are sorted in alphabetical order by surname within each year. Birth records do not become OPEN public records until they are fifty years old, and death records become OPEN after twenty-five years. All indexes are sorted in alphabetical order by surname within each year. The GENERAL BIRTH INDEX includes the last, first, and middle name, if any, of the registrant, date of birth, county of birth, and sex of registrant, and may also include father's name and mother's maiden name. All indexes are sorted in alphabetical order by surname within each year. If the record falls into the open record category, a general index may be made available for public use [later?]. The GENERAL DEATH INDEX includes the last, first, and middle name, if any, of the registrant, date of death, county of death, and sex of registrant, and may also include social security number, marital status, and the spouse's name. All indexes are sorted in alphabetical order by surname within each year. If the record falls into the open record category, a general index may be made available for public use [later?]. These are files you can download, some quite large [File size: 9 - 13 MB File type: ASCII, tab delimited], but it beats reading microfiche at the library. They promise they will put them in HTML "soon." Marriage indexes are available on microfiche or CD-ROM from 1966-present and divorce indexes are available from 1968-present. They may be available on the internet in the future (depends on customer demand). So DEMAND! The Marriage Index includes the last, first, and middle name, if any, the county of issue, the date of marriage, the spouse's name, and state file number. The Divorce Index includes the last, first, and middle name, if any, the county of issue, the date of divorce, the spouse's name, and state file number.

    2. Dani
    3. Just passing this info on from the alt.genealogy news group. Sorry if it is a repeat. Danielle ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Group: alt.genealogy Date: Tue, Apr 4, 2000, 6:38pm (AKDT+8) From: [email protected] LDS Church Temple Announcement and its implications to genealogy. The LDS Church announced Sunday at its conference that they were planning to build six more Temples. They are to be in Lubbock Texas, Tri-Cities Washington, Snowflake Arizona, Asuncion Paraguay, Helsinki Finland, and Aba Nigeria. That last one, Aba Nigeria, will be of significant interest to genealogists, mainly those with African ancestries. Why? Because of the need to develop a new method to handle vital events before the African nations adopted the Western calendar and recorded vital event dates by that method. The LDS Church is working on that issue right now. What may come out of this is a way to tie an individual to his/her parents, etc., by way of relationships or some method similar, again due to the fact that they, before adopting the Western calendar, handled time and date events differently than we did. I do not know what that will be. They hope to have the Temple up and running within 15-30 months depending on how long it takes to get the necessary government approvals for the construction of the Temple itself. -- James W. Anderson [email protected] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    3. hello everybody, pardone, no habla espanol I am interested in the surnames CABA (-S -T) which was the name of my grand-mother in Britanny, France, in the Nantes area. That name probably arrived there around the XVth century, surely from Spain but I would like to know more precisely where in Spain. Could anyone tell me the signification of that name, and where it comes from in your country? Andalousia and the area of Sevilia and Cadix could be the place : I have heard that most boats going to the world where coming from there, and some of them used to stop in Nantes on their way to the (Spanish) Netherlands in the XVth and XVIth centuries. Muchas gracias for your comments. Philippe
