The actor was Brian Reece if I remember and PC49 also featured in some comic, although my favourite was Black Bob and Andrew Glenn - lively sketches of Bob jumping over dry stone walls in pursuit of the robbers. I note that in the 80's this was successfully satirised by Viz magazine and renamed The Black Plastic Bin Liner - very droll.
