Canadian rail might be the best--they have lovely tours going. Amtrak is okay, but I don't know if you can get coast to coast on it. Train travel is becoming, sadly, a thing of the past. When I was 4 my parents shipped me off by train from Omaha, Neb. to Davenport Iowa, across the state of Iowa in other words, by myself, with no fear. Now that isn't something parents will or can do. No trains to carry passengers unless it is Amtrak and that might not go where you want to go. When I was 5 they did the same thing to me but by plane. Again something parents aren't to do now. However, as in the case of our grand daughter, when she travels from North Carolina to Iowa, an airline stewardess stays with her from start to finish and in reverse too. To often children are sent off, never to be seen or heard of again. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim SHARPE" <sharpe@britishlibrary.net> To: <GEN-FRIENDS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 21, 2002 10:20 AM Subject: [GEN-FRIENDS] Holidays One of my life's ambitions is to journey across the continent on the Canadian or the Union Pacific Railroad.
