Some years ago when living in Merseyside we had a cat but she was run over by a car and had to be put down. Some years passed and we moved back to Yorkshire. One Winter's night we had been watching TV until the early hours. I went into the kitchen and saw a small face peering at me through the glass panel in the door. At the time it was snowing very heavily. I let the cat, a ginger tom, into the house, gave it a tin of sardines with some ground up cereal and some milk. I made sure to open the sardine tin first as I wasn't sure that the cat could cope with the tin opener. The cat was in beautiful condition and well fed. We made many enquiries in the town but although several people in the area said that they had seen the cat, no-one could say that they knew the owner. The cat, which we called Fred, stayed with us for many years before dying peacefully as I was taking it to the Vet.
