Thought Brian might be interested in this story We all know the story about the xmas day football match in WW1. Less well known is a Capt Neville of the East Surrey Regt who on leave bought 4 footballs one for each of his Platoon Commanders. On the morning of July 1st 1916 his men were about to enter the battle for Montauban. Believing it in good spirits for his men the Platoon commanders were ordered to "Kick Off" as they went over the top with a prize on offer for the first man to score a "Goal " in the German trenches. sadly that day and in a matter of minutes 60,000 British casualties were sustained including the said Captain.
