Mum really wanted to take nurses training instead but Grandma felt Mum was not suited to nursing. Finally in 1939 Mum started training as a nurse but when WW2 started they stopped training nurses and Mum ended up working as a secretary at Metropolitan Vickers, Trafford park, Manchester. Grandma also worked there as the Nurse in Charge of the Girls' ambulance Room from 1939 to 1943. I have the copy of the poem The White Cliffs by Alice Duer Miller that Grandma received as a farewell present. It is signed by her fellow workers.
